If only Congress were able to independently pass DC municipal legislation without seeking approval from residents, or had some sort of Financial Control Board in place to supervise DC, I'm sure Steve Scalise would have done something about it.
I don't understand the logic of forcing DC to join another state. This country contains large rural states with low populations but the inverse of this (tiny states with large populations) is somehow not ok? The reality is that this state lacks representation of urban communities. Rural voters are disproportionately represented in the Senate so two urban (and likely African American) senators would bring some much needed representation and balance. I'm not speaking about balance in terms of political parties but rather in the representation of urban interests.
*GUY WHO HAS LOTS OF BORING OPINIONS ABOUT LOCAL ISSUES ALSO STRIKINGLY IGNORANT OF LOCAL ISSUES IN OTHER LOCALES, YET STILL HAS OPINIONS - DEVELOPING -
NYC and Plattsburgh have dramatic differences in taxes, housing costs, lifestyle...should one of them secede?
Delaware is a small state, and has sent an idiot to the senate, which gave him a national platform that he used to divide americans.
most Dems opposed to retrocession simply want D.C. statehood in order to add two new Democratic seats in the Senate.
Start a thread proposing retrocession and you may get answers. Or better yet, go back to 1790 and poll people. This thread is on DC statehood. Why do you oppose DC statehood? I mean, besides partisan concerns...
i support representation for the residents of DC. the best, least controversial way to do this is via retrocession to Mary-Land.
The people of DC would like to be a state though. They don't want to be part of another state. The only people that don't want them to become a state are doing so for plainly partisan reason. https://statehood.dc.gov/page/why-statehood-dc
the same might be said for people who do want them to become a state--they are doing so for plainly partisan reasons
the people of DC want taxation *with* representation. Maryland can give it to them. it's a natural fit.
You apparently did not read the page I linked. Read it and then come back with a complete list of why they want to become a state.
