Again. You're right that NATO came out of the Cold War but it's purpose isn't specifically opposing the USSR. That's not what the NATO charter says. It says an attack against one is an attack against all and doesn't specify who the attacker might be.

Further Aricle I of the charter encourages cooperation and peaceful resolution of disputes countries.

    https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/official_texts_17120.htm

There has been talk of disbanding NATO since the early 90's but that is very much a minority viewpoint in the member countries and not countries, not even the US, has taken any major steps towards it. There are still more countries like Ukraine asking if they can join than countries thinking about leaving.

That's not exactly so as not all the countries that fought with the US in Afghanistan fought in Iraq, most notably NATO members France and Turkey. In fact Turkey didn't allow the US to use it's territory or even US bases set up in Turkey for NATO to be used for the invasion of Iraq.

It doesn't matter what the reasons are for Russia's territorial interest. They have threatened the Baltic states before but have backed down since Estonia joined NATO. In fact Russia strongly resisted Estonia joining NATO arguing it was an unnecessary provocation but the both the other NATO members and Estonia felt it was necessary.

Donald Trump was given a direct one-on-one briefing on how Russia is funding Taliban militants in Afghanistan over a year ago. He received a direct daily brief on how Russia was offering bounties for the murder of American troops over five months ago. Since that date, Trump has spoken to Vladimir Putin at least eight times. That includes a call made last week, well after the public became aware that Russia has both offered, and paid out, for the murder of U.S. forces.

But in all the times he’s talked with Putin, Trump hasn’t seen fit to discuss how Russia is paying for American deaths, and for the Taliban to keep Afghanistan in turmoil so that the United States can’t withdraw its remaining forces. And in a Tuesday interview with Axios, Trump left absolutely no doubt, “I have never discussed it with him.”

I saw that interview and out the shyteshow that normally is a Trump interview the most troubling was when asked about Russia arming the Taliban he turned around and started talking about us arming the Taliban..

I hear a lot of Trump supporters complain about when people draw moral equivalences between the US and other countries yet Trump has done it many times.

U.S. Intel Walks Back Claim Russians Put Bounties on American Troops

Translated from the jargon of spyworld, that means the intelligence agencies have found the story is, at best, unproven—and possibly untrue.

“The United States intelligence community assesses with low to moderate confidence that Russian intelligence officers sought to encourage Taliban attacks on U.S. and coalition personnel in Afghanistan in 2019 and perhaps earlier,” a senior administration official said.

Important to note... "low to moderate confidence" doesn't not necessarily mean russia didn't offer such bounties but instead the confidence in the intel community only had low to moderate confidence in the intel. And as such the sanctions taken by the Biden admin were not based on that intel.

While we will never know for sure... it would be interesting to learn how often actions are taken based on various levels of confidence...

I just wonder what these clowns like @tallanvor or @J.R. would do if during a campaign Iran hacked private correspondences of the RNC(confirmed by our own intelligence agencies), leaked them steadily through the course of the lead up to the 2012 election, created a system of troll farms spamming American social media services with fake news that benefited Obama's campaign, while at the same time Obama had investment loans from a bank that was fined over 100 million dollars for money laundering Iranian dirty money, had multiple plans for hotels being built in Iran, had multiple campaign members have ties to Iran, provided campaign data to Iran, had one of his daughters accept a meeting invitation in a email from Iranian officials explicitly declaring their support for her father, and at one point Obama "jokingly" said "Iran, if you are listening, if you have more damaging emails of Romney please leak them"?

Like honestly, be a little introspective, and ask yourselves J.R, Tallnavor, Stupid Moniker etc.

No one believed this originally. The media just seized an opportunity at a key time.

Do you have "higher to no doubt" confidence that the initial Russian-Bounty story was false?

What is your "I called BS" batting average?

    Just curious.

I like MSNBC. I had to stop watching during the 2016 campaign because of Trump vilifying. This was an example afterwards
