So is the Arenas rule that 2nd rounders go into restricted free agency after their first contract expires or is it something different than that?

It's for second rounders or undrafted free agents with one or two years of experience who hit free agency before a team gets full Bird rights. It limits the amount that other teams can offer such players in offer sheets, including the structure of said offer sheets.

Gotcha, so is this Arenas rule why Morey had to get creative and sign both Asik and Lin to 'poison pill' contracts?

I'm reading this and I think that's what it is implying?

Yep! Morey manipulated the Arenas Rule to make those offer sheets to Asik and Lin as painful as possible to their incumbent teams (Bulls and Knicks). But those teams were still ALLOWED to match those offer sheets because of the Arenas Rule. There was later a slight change to the Arenas Rule that allowed an incumbent team that was then UNDER THE CAP to elect how it wanted to take the cap hits on their free agent if they matched an offer sheet (Arenas Rule structure or regular structure), to the extent it had enough cap room to do so. (It would not have helped in the Asik or Lin situations, but it would have helped the Heat in the Tyler Johnson situation.)

But his influence just helped the Heat break their 6 game losing streak! Trade paying dividends already.

Agreed. We can talk contracts, strategies, and other available moves, and most of it is going straight over my head.

But when Dipo was here, rarely played, and especially seemed like never with Wall or Wood, since they were missing games too.
Never got a flow, although Dipo showed some promise when hot. Legit 2 way SG. Still, no chemistry was able to develop here.

So, to move him and net cap space (which some say was the goal for this), plus get a couple role players to get a look at, and move a couple spots in draft, not terrible. Y'all realize Olynyk tearing it up here and seems to fit well, while we haven't seen Dipo hit floor for the Heat?

Got my homer glasses on I guess. Glass half full and Rockets set for future, with key players, cap space, and lots of picks---all to stay away from full rebuild mode. Harden caused all this(Paul, Westbrook, wanting out), the domino, but I'm glad it happened.

Olynik fits better for this team than OlaDipo did and they both start with the letter O so it was a win.

I just keep coming back to the fact that if you were gonna take 5 cents on the dollar for Vic but get back a productive player with size on an expiring in Olynyk, why not make up for the lack of rebuilding assets by moving him to another team? It’s maddening because all we are doing is hurting our chances for fir a top pick while he gets to walk for big money in free agency. He’ll be 30 next season so it’s not like he’s worth trying to resign.

I know I have to get over this but Stone really squandered opportunities by waiting to that last minute of the deadline; and it didn’t have to be that way. This is a 6’11” player in his prime years who shoots 36/37% from 3 career. He had value to other teams and we’re just gonna waste it. Or worse yet, we’re gonna hurt our ourselves with it. It just doesn’t make sense for a rebuilding team.

Rockets are trying to shed Salaries.

Avery Bradley is definitely gone after this year.

Kelly Olynek is really talented and a great fit for the Rockets.
The Rockets want to keep him.

Kelly Olynek I think wants to go to a contender and get paid.

Rockets are a Lottery Team Next Year also. The West is Deeper.

Overpaying for Kelly doesnt make sense.

John Wall and Eric Gordon have the highest Salaries that needed to traded.

I don't see why you need to worry. Olynyk is a nice player but he's not good enough to spoil the tank. We are 4 games ahead of Orlando to be bumped out of the bottom 3, which is all that matters to give us the highest possible odds to get a top 4 pick.

I would like a player like Olynyk when we are competitive again. Too bad the timing isn't right.

If Olynyk helps his stock enough to get a large new contract that the Rockets don't want to pay him, then the Rockets may have an opportunity to work a S&T deal with a team that may or may not have quite enough cap room to sign him outright. Could generate a TPE as large as $12.82M. That's nothing to sneeze at.

okay but wouldn’t it have been better to move him to another team at the deadline and guarantee a return?

I see. So you're saying that if the Arenas rule had been in effect before this, the New York Knicks would've taken that 7 spot instead of the Warriors and drafted Stephen Curry in 2009, Carmelo would retire a Nugget, the Rockets would have won three straight championships from 2016-2019, the Warriors would never have matched up against the 2007 70 win Mavs and won in the first round so Dallas would have another Championship, and Durant would've never left OKC, the Rockets would've never traded for Westbrook. The Seattle Supersonics might even still be a team! Royce White wouldn't have had mental challenges and would've been the next Dennis Rodman. Incredible.

@Clutch maybe you want to do a podcast addendum on how Victor Oladipo Trade a Big Disappointment in Miami?

    through 7 games:

    DNP
    DNP
    DNP
    DNP
    6 points (2-8), 5 assists, 2 stls 3 TO 5 fouls
    8 points (3-13) 5 assists 2 stls 4 TO 5 fouls
Tonight, best game in a Heat uniform 16-6 on 6/14 , but -18 in a game they lost by 12 after getting blown out for most of the 4th

    edit:
