There is a near 100% certainty that Heyman’s report that the Astros haven’t budged on their 6-year, $120-million offer is wrong. That was the reported offer more than a week ago when Correa publicly admitted his displeasure with it. The Astros did not continue negotiations over the weekend by offering the same deal that they already knew he disliked and would never accept. If they did, you would have seen reports stating negotiations have halted, and Correa likely publicly admits his frustration again. Also, Heyman is the same reporter that said Valdez would need season-ending surgery for his fractured finger on multiple occasions. He’s not exactly the most credible reporter.
Perhaps the Astros would still be good with giving Correa 10 years $300+ but want Correa to prove it this year. If they don't think they are getting much of a "discount" by signing him now then wait until the offseason and sign him for about the same that he's asking for now (if he does have a great/healthy year). This one season could have a $100+ million dollar swing in either direction. Astros have loads of payroll flexibility to get a long-term deal done.
I think this is very possible. If Correa wants a contract in the same stratosphere as Lindor, he needs to stay healthy all year and play at an elite level. The Astros have no motivation to do such a deal today, not with Kris Bryant, Trevor Story, Javier Baez, Corey Seager, Freddie Freeman and Anthony Rizzo scheduled to be free agents after the season (Nolan Arenado could also possibly join the group).
MT on the radio has been talking(for weeks) like it’s a foregone conclusion Correa will be gone for sure if an extension isn’t done . I think Carlos wants to be in Houston. I really like how he stood up for the stros when the disparaging talk was at its highest . this answer is a little fishy from click . Is he saying Carlos’ team is the one that stopped things ? I guess I understand. I wouldn’t want to focus on anything but the season if I was CC, but can’t his agent deal with negotiations? I just hope the Astros offered more than 6/120 I don’t think offering 23-25 million a year for 6-8 years is a back breaker and is probably a no brainer for the stros . What is correas bottom dollar ? I think if the market will pay him , even up to 33-4 we will match that (but will go lower on years ) of course , anything can happen . Team success as well as CC’s individual performance will matter . What would winning another WS do to the leverage on both sides ? Anyways , pumped for The opener tonight
I think any chance they might have had was crushed by the Lindor deal. My guess, unless he gets hurt again, he’ll be long gone after the season.
Correa: "They made it clear to me they don't believe in long contracts, they don't believe in big contracts." Correa: "There were not really any negotiations. The way I feel is it's another year with the Houston Astros and I'm going to go out there and do my best and try to bring a championship to the city." Correa said he talked to Lindor for an hour last night and said he loved the contract he received and how he pushed the market for the shortstops. Carlos Correa on James Click's comment that the door is still open: "In terms of a long contract and a big contract, they closed it right away." Carlos Correa said the Astros offered him five years for $125 million after the six-year, $120 million offer. Correa said his personal goal is to have a .900-plus OPS over 150 games.
I appreciate that he's willing to share details like this - we usually don't get this kind of stuff from players. For example, we have no idea what the Astros offered Springer.
Well then I guess the Astros will never retain any of their home grown superstars in the future. They got Altuve signed before mega contracts of 10+ years got more common and Bregman wanted an early payday. They can have at least one of these 10 year $300m contracts on the books and do just fine (for the right player). If Correa has an MVP level season than he might be the guy to give that to.
I’m glad the Astros aren’t offering stupid 10 year deals, especially not to players who get injured. I also think this should fuel Correa to cut out all bullshit and be the best he can possibly be.
They got Altuve signed because they were able to convince him early to sign a contract that he overperformed. They extended him before they had to, in part because he earned it... but also because he’d be more likely to accept it to get out of the current deal. They could pull a similar deal with Bregman before the current deal is done...again, if he overperforms it. The key is you have to get these done early in the pre-arbitration process... the closer a player gets to free agency, the harder it will be.
so it’s official and Correa won’t be coming back to Astros. Some team will give him a long term 8-10 year contract next off season of healthy. Not saying right or wrong not locking Correa in for 10 years, but it will be another teams decision. Looking for an incredible year from Corrrea
