Northline Mall! I remember it when it was new and sparkly. It had a big fountain where people would throw in spare change. It was safe and no one ever got shot. For a while they had a big super slide out in the parking lot and fun was had by all. Life on the north side in the 60’s.
Wow, teen years, my friend and I would catch the Metro to Sharpstown or the Galleria, that was so fun. Used to hit up the game room at the Galleria. Also miss the old Meyerland with the movie theater, game room and even Woolworth's I believe.
I still use an ottoman. I think I got one from JC Penny back in the day It came with the chair @Os Trigonum
Sharpstown - My dad would always take me and my bro with him to buy Krugerrands at the coin shop and then we’d go to the little bakery on the lower level by the escalator (Tiffany’s I think it was called?) for an eclair. Dad has passed but the coins are still in a safe deposit box, they will most likely be handed down to remind future generations of hard work and investing. Told Mom to sell and buy a couple BTC before I pawn them for a weekend of strippers and coke in Vegas but don’t think she’s going for it. Meyerland - Used to have what they called a Moonlight Madness Sale and parents would take me there so I could blow my allowance at gap. One time I found somebody’s old sneakers they must have tossed out after buying new ones and tried them on, Dad slapped me so hard my little brother still tells the story today...the first slap the shoes went flying one way and on the second one my brother went flying the opposite. West Oaks - Was a bit older by the time I started going here and spent half the time buying action figures from KayB Toys and the other half buying clothes from Benetton (which was pretty much overpriced, loudly colored gap). Highland Mall - Not a Houston mall, the one in Austin...strippers and coke at Sugar’s.
Let me know when the food courts open to full capacity, right now there's only about 3 food stands at the first colony mall food court and none of them is Sakura Japan, the best fast food stand in any mall. Chicken Terriyaki and shrimp over white rice is the best, nothing beats that.
Not sure I understand OP. Memorial City Mall was packed all the time before the pandemic....I had to go there once since the pandemic, and it was way more crowded than I expected it would be given, you know...a pandemic.
Willowbrook and the Woodlands were my two go to's. Haven't been to Willowbrook in probably 20 years. Occasionally visited Katy Mills for Bass Pro once it opened. That bourbon and lemon chicken was where it was at.
The big Sharpstown mall decline came around the early 2ks. I remember 97 or 98 it was still pretty decent. Rip to Sharpstown mall and to that Tinseltown that was nearby.
Shopping with mom as a kid it was Memorial City, T&C or West Oaks, didn't matter to me although MC had Piccadilly's Cafeteria, which was badass. Jr High on it was all about the Galleria, sans mom.
Memorial City and Katy Mills are the only malls I have been to recently. You can barely find a parking spot at Memorial. We always park near the Cali Pizza Kitchen and you have to drive around waiting for someone to leave. Katy Mills was packed last weekend. The line at H&M was around the store to pay.
Memorial was on the brink of closing down in the late 2010's. Something happened that it's now a pretty packed mall. Maybe Katy or the energy corridor happened.
Memorial City was pretty solid when I frequented there in the mid-2010s. Galleria wasn't very far living right off of Westheimer midway between 8 and 6, but **** that noise parking wise, like the one time I saw a movie at Greenway Plaza. Covered parking near Dillard's was convenient, additional nearby development like Best Buy, movie theater and Cheesecake Factory pretty much everything I need out of a mall. West Oaks was far more depressing, but ironically like a lot of dead malls there was decent retail development nearby. In undergrad I had an internship at the Esperson Building, then the Galleria Financial Tower, so lots of Park Shoppes and Angelika downtown, then 2.5 hour bus rides with a transfer at Montrose / Westheimer to get to the Galleria. The Metro 68 Crosstown went straight from Scott Street outside U of H to Meyereland Plaza, and the T&C/K&G Men's Superstore had crazy suit deals back when you still wore those to career fairs and on-campus interviews.
You should be upgraded as a member for mentioning highland mall and the businesses across the street remember when Texas relays happens and the mall suddenly gets shut down ?
