My understanding is that under US law unaccompanied minors cannot be turned away, unless they are from Mexico or Canada.... nearly 90% of these kids are not from Mexico or Canada.

Maybe I am wrong, but either way I agree with Romney that it will lead to more kids coming.

    https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/us-detention-child-migrants

Here is a very fair historical and number based view on US immigration policy, the number of children and adults, the historical numbers and the criticisms of the all the different policies of the different administrations.

This is FAR from the most immigrants we have seen attempt to cross the border, but WHO the immigrants are and where they are coming from has changed.

    He is following the law.

The 2008 Trafficking Victims Reauthorization Act signed by GW Bush has been the law, Donald Trump was the one that deviated from it. Trump relied on COVID claiming that it was necessary to keep them out of the USA, which sounds reasonable until you consider that the President down played and lied about the dangers of COVID to the US people.

Likewise, Biden has been very critical of non stringent COVID standards, but takes in immigrant children that may have COVID.

So I see a lot of hypocrisy here on both sides.

The best way to handle this is not how we are going to handle it...... we will handle it in whatever way appears to be most politically beneficial. So I suspect that will be pressuring Mexico to be "the bad guys" and send the children away before they ever reach the US border.

One thing that I will say was a bad move by the Biden Admin and deserves criticism is putting out video of a detention center and then admitting that was "aspirational" and it didn't represent the condition at most of the detention centers.

"Q If I could follow up on the question on the border: The access being granted today for the pool is of a facility that is aspirational of where you want to move these children. What about access to the facilities where there is overcrowding and there is an actual problem? Why was this one chosen over those?

MS. PSAKI: We’re also open to providing access there, and this is just the first step in the process of providing greater access to the media.

Q And when would that decision to be made? You said earlier this week that you would be working on access. Is this the only access, or will that be coming in the coming days like the —

MS. PSAKI: No, I would — I would consider it — it’s ongoing, and we wanted to provide pool coverage, as you all know who are in the television — field of television that allows for video — a video camera to provide access to all the networks. We felt that would be a good first step, and we’re looking forward to continuing to engage about how to provide increased access.

Q Would you agree, though, that you’ve chosen the facility that is the aspirational facility, as opposed to the problem at this moment?

MS. PSAKI: Well, I would say we all agree that the Border Patrol facilities are not places where children should be. They are — children should be moving more quickly through those facilities. That is what our policy’s central focus is right now, as you know, Jeff. And there are also — it’s also becoming a public health concern because of the number of kids who are moving through those facilities and the fact —

Q But why not show those? Why not show those to the American people?

MS. PSAKI: Well, we will, and we are working with the Border Patrol and with DHS to determine how we can do that. "

    Okay?

That doesn't mean they all will enter the US, in fact how many wanted to enter the US 20 years ago (when illegal immigration was twice what it is now), how many 30 years ago?

What is the ten year plan? What was the plan in the 1960's when illegal aliens from Mexico started flooding into Southern California? What was the plan for the last 60 years when illegal alents started crossing the Texas border at twice the rate they are now? Why is this such a concern now when it hasn't been when more illegal aliens were crossing into the USA?

Is the author seriously taking the position that 42 million South Americans and Central Americans are going to enter the USA over the next handful of years?

It's not even the power of incentive as much as it is the power of disincentive.

Many immigrants would absolutely yeet their kids over the border, knowing they likely will not see them again for many years (if ever), because the alternative is so grim.

There's this idea that people are coming here just so they can live off of welfare and take benefits. The reality is that many of these are people aren't looking for an easy life but actual about being able to live.

I think it's important to remember that 7,500 children is not the same as 42 million people.

If you have to violate one law to enforce another what good is it? I still agree that everyone needs to be refused entry and Biden's statement yesterday on the subject only added fuel to the fire.

They didn't before Trump took office?

In fact there were less under Obama that Trump.

One argument that supports Trump's immigration policy could make is that conditions changed under Trump, that more families and children from worn torn places like El Salvador and Guatemala and Honduras than in the past, and so the situation under Obama and prior administrations shouldn't apply. However I would point out that the amount of people trying to enter the USA is literally half of what it was 20 years ago. Also, the majority of the issues Trump faced Obama did as well when it care to border issues.

The Obama and now Biden tact is to follow the law passed under Bush for asylum seekers, but to increase the amount of money provided to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to keep people from leaving those countries. Obama gave 750 million dollars to those three nations collectively and the amount of people coming to the US border was far less. Trump cut out the 750 million in aid and attempted to increase border wall spending and claimed a national emergency to not have to follow the 2008 law passed under GW Bush.

The United States is in a tough spot, because South of the US border isn't as prosperous. The economy in Mexico has improved to the point that immigration from Mexico really isn't a big issue anymore. However, the populism in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras has caused a max exodus.

We are likely going to see border issues improve in the next couple years because the Biden administration will pay off the other nations to keep them from coming to the US border. The relative cost isn't high.
