Yankees shopping Mike Tauchmann. I’m sure they would be very hesitant to trade with the Astros but I wouldn’t mind him as an upgrade over McCormick to compete with Straw if they didn’t want much in return.
Completely agree with 6 years/150 million getting it done. I don't think he'd sign a 10 year/250 million deal because he'd want to hit FA or re-up for more in his early 30's. I do think Correa to 3rd opens up flexibility for those teams with a SS in place. Someone could overpay for Correa or maybe he actually plays 150+ games and finishes Top 3 in MVP voting. If that happens, he's going to get over 30 million per year... We will eventually see a full season from him and I'd hate to not have gotten a deal done and he bolts.
Agreed... I just think Crane has a more hands on approach to all aspects of the team than many here think. It also seem that he mainly steered the Altuve and Verlander extensions.
6/150 is what I'd expect to get it done as well. I don't want to lose Correa's clutch gene and defense as the most important infield position on the field. If stays healthy all year he's going to be a monster.
That almost reads like a threat. I still would be way more comfortable extending him later in the season.
Sounds like he’s fishing for a longer deal... I actually would have supported a shorter deal for higher dollars, and I’m surprised he’s not trying to get in a position to get paid twice over the next 5-7 years.
He knows it's just a matter of time till he gets hurt again, he's hoping to lock in a long term deal at WAY more than he's worth before that happens.
It’s pretty common for players to halt contract extension negotiations once a season starts, I don’t think this is a big deal.
My main thought is he maybe hurting his own cause. Most folks don't like a gun to their head, much less the very folks your trying to get a lot of money from. This deadline essentially does that and also makes the FO wonder what the hurry is also, bringing more attention to his obvious health record.
Astros had all offseason to get a deal done. Having a deadline of the season for an extension is very usual. This isn't a gun.
Carlos Correa said the 6-year, $120-million offer was a couple of weeks ago. He said they haven't spoken about an extension since then. "I'm preparing like I'm going to be a free agent," he said. Correa on the Astros: "If they don't see me here long term, then another team will." Correa: "The first offer, I thought, was really low. If that’s how they feel about me and that’s where we stand, then I guess I will go out there and play and try to win a championship for the city of Houston before free agency.” Correa: "My swing feels sexy. ... I'm barreling balls everywhere and seeing balls great. I've never felt this great the last week of Spring Training in my career." Correa said his April 1 deadline won’t be moved back: “For me, it doesn’t make any sense to be dealing while I’m trying to focus and trying to perform and trying to help my team win ballgames. So, yeah, absolutely not.” Correa: “I’ve given five, six years of my career to this organization – Rookie of the Year, All-Star Games, World Series champions, multiple great playoff performances. And if they don’t see me here long-term, then another team will. It’s never hard feelings. It’s a business...” “When I share my feelings towards the city and towards the team, obviously, I love what we built here,” Correa said. “I’ve been a part of it since I got drafted in 2012, when the team was losing 111 games. I kind of feel like I’m one of the leaders of the team and I love everything about this organization, but at the same time, I know what I’m worth. I understand the business. I’m educated on this matter. I would love to stay, but it’s gotta be the right deal.”
In a way, Astros were in a win-win. If Correa accepts the $120m, they get an mvp caliber player thru the bulk of his prime for 30-50% of his market value. If he rejects, they get a player who feels jilted and has something to prove in a contract year (and they get a draft pick). My prediction is that Correa will either get hurt or have an absolutely monster year.
I've been fairly consistent in my issues with his inability to stay healthy, but honestly the 6 year deal would be a complete non starter if I were Correa as well. That would have him hit free agency after his age 32 season, which is just about the worst time possible as earning potential goes. The AAV is on the low side as well, although probably very fair given his actual productivity in recent years. Unless this season is a complete train wreck, I have trouble believing Correa can't get 100 million this offseason even given his health issues. If I were in Correa's camp it would be short deal or monster deal, nothing in between unless the AAV is massive.
