I didn’t say San Francisco didn’t suck.

Both of our kids went to magnet middle schools and LASA (the Liberal Arts and Science Academy), the magnet high school here in Austin. LASA, the last time I checked (and it’s been more than a few years), is rated one of the top 50 high schools in the country. It’s literally across town from where we live, which meant a hell of a lot of driving back and forth as both were involved with extracurricular activities. One in robotics, the other in theatre. Well worth it. Both graduated from college in four years, one with two degrees.

Austin Community College has a deal with AISD where high school students (any high school student) can attend classes for college credit during the summer tuition free. Our kids took advantage of it to get classes out of the way that they didn’t want to take at a university. They graduated from LASA years ago, but it’s still a fine school, one I highly recommend to anyone in Austin with a kid. Yes, you have to apply, but it’s worth looking into.

I don’t know about “parents raising kids to be smart,” @tinman. Sometimes you just get lucky. We didn’t even think about magnet schools until our oldest heard a talk from a teacher that LASA had going around telling 5th graders about the magnet program. She came home and said, “This is where I want to go to middle school,” and told us all about it.

Sort of freaked us out as we hadn’t heard of them, but we said we’d look into it. The reason we had purchased a house in our neighborhood in Southwest Austin was because of the highly rated schools. Otherwise, we would never have moved to the suburbs. We had lived in South Central Austin for years. Yet our 5th grader was telling us that she wanted to go somewhere not remotely near where we live. Crazy.

 

Intelligence is some combination of genetics and environment, and it is unknown exactly how much of each contribute. Certainly though a parent can help to instill a strong work ethic, a focus on education, an appreciation of reading, etc. to a child. Most any teacher will say that parental involvement in their child's education (making sure they do homework and review it, attend class on time, etc.) is at least as important as anything the teacher is doing in the classroom.

We knew that at the time and were both deeply involved in raising our kids. Always great advice, of course. As for genetics, I think they skipped a generation in our case. ;-)

 

I haven't followed this situation very closely but it does sound like a situation of misplaced priorities among the school board and some dumb tweets made.

It sounds like the focus on renaming schools at a time when schools were closing was a big example of misplaced priorities.

 

I think Asians experience more racism from other minorities than from white people.
