How ‘Owning the Libs’ Became the GOP’s Core Belief https://www.politico.com/news/magaz...ibs-history-trump-politics-pop-culture-477203 “‘Owning the libs’ is a way of asserting dignity,” says Helen Andrews, senior editor of The American Conservative. “‘The libs,’ as currently constituted, spend a lot of time denigrating and devaluing the dignity of Middle America and conservatives, so fighting back against that is healthy self-assertion; any self-respecting human being would … Stunts, TikTok videos, they energize people, that’s what they’re intended to do.”
It’s amazing isn’t it? They actually believe that the way to reduce gun violence is to increase the amount of guns among the general populace. Somehow having more of something is going to lead to less of its usage. It boggles the mind. Then when you point to actual evidence of reducing guns leading to less gun violence like Japan and Australia they can’t grasp it.
I think this works quite well for the left. Anything less than Trumps shock jock act will disappoint the base that has come to expect to be whipped up into a frenzy over Dr. Seuss type issues. Future candidates have to up their crazy game which will lead to centrists continuing to leave the party they no longer recognize.
This is true but you also have a certain group that really has no allegiance to either party that likes this type of stuff. I think nits a net negative for Republicans but can probably sway more down ballot elections.
I don't think overall this strategy is good for the Republican party or the country as a whole. As we saw with Trump the Democrats can easily nominate a very unpopular candidate who can't win enough in swing states to allow demagogue who owns the libs to come to power. Also having one of the two main parties obsessed about trolling the other party isn't a good thing for the US. There are serious issues regarding the direction of this country. There are many legitimate grievances that voters who aren't well represented by the Democrats need to be addressed. A party that is more obsessed with symbolic fights and gestures isn't serving those voters well. This is why many of Trump's policies actually made things worse for his base.
The doubling down on crazy is only going to work for a few more election cycles. It’s dependent on uneducated people and boomers. We will always have stupid people but the boomers are dying off.
The data does not track for that, boomers vote pretty evenly. The U.S. electorate is aging: 52% of registered voters are ages 50 and older, up from 41% in 1996. This shift has occurred in both partisan coalitions. More than half of Republican and GOP-leaning voters (56%) are ages 50 and older, up from 39% in 1996. And among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters, half are 50 and older, up from 41% in 1996.
It's scary that someone this dumb is an elected Representative in this country. The Republican Party is really sad.
Every time you think it can't get worse... Michigan GOP chair quips on video about assassination, 'three witches' Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser labeled the state's top Democratic officeholders "witches" and referenced "assassination" Thursday when pressed for answers about how to remove two sitting GOP congressmen. In a video obtained by The Detroit News, Weiser made the comments while taking questions from the audience at a North Oakland Republican Club meeting. Watch the video here. Someone in the crowd asked how to unseat U.S. Reps. Fred Upton of St. Joseph and Peter Meijer of Grand Rapids Township, who were among 10 House Republicans to support the impeachment of former President Donald Trump in January. The Senate voted to acquit. Weiser responded that the party is focused on beating the "three witches" in 2022, referring to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson — the three statewide Democratic leaders who are up for re-election next year. Then someone in the crowd can be heard asking about the "witches in our own party." "Ma'am, other than assassination, I have no other way ... other than voting out. OK?" Weiser said. "You people have to go out there and support their opponents. You have to do what you need to get out the vote in those areas. That's how you beat people." https://www.detroitnews.com/story/n...ips-assassination-3-witches-video/7011870002/
