The lazy one is going way way back; I don't think that's prevalent now. Now it's neutral or the opposite.

The school thing is a recent one. The school one can probably be its own thread; nuanced part where American born Asians compete with foreign born Asians.

Ivy Leagues who admit students who in their country faked the TOEFL scores. A la aunt Becky. Professors, TAs grading their assignments, and fellow phD grads, wonder how these folks got past the gate. It's not everyone, but enough where the academic community has been grumbling for a while.

Admitting foreign students is big money; since many pay full price to get in.

    dizzying height of myopia !

convenient stereotyping on your part. u seem to think that only Asians are
    • foreign students. and
    • involved in academic scandals.

foreign students include white students from Russia and Europe.

in case u don't know, the recent academic scandal in elite colleges involves the unscrupulous actions by rich white Americans, a la Felicity Huffman, etc

Yes Americans were guilty of this. Of that list Rich Europeans and Asians also. The common theme was not race, but money and parents buying their way in.

What I allude to is that schools like Harvard and Yale were getting critique because a good chunk of their campus have many Asian kids walking around. That's not to say they don't belong there; it's that it's so competive that if the admission committee has unconscious bias, if you're Asian, you're better off not checking the Asian box, because the candidate is already competing with the bright Asian students in this country, the smart ones outside the country, and the dumb (but Rich) outside the country.

The dumb ones who fake their TOEFL to get in, does nobody any favors. They can't understand the lectures and can't meaningfully particupate in group projects. Outside the chance of a fancy degree, they're robbing themselves of an education. They either flunk out or some teachers look past it.

yet u seem to keep on focusing on Asians

    so what.

if you go visit my alma mater, UC Irvine, where the student population is > 40% Asian, u'd call it an Asian invasion

To clarify I don't agree with the invasion premise. But I also am not ignoring the optics and some people feel this way. Some of the critique are not warranted, ignoring them won't make them disappear.

They shouldn’t change the academic standards to get into particular schools . Not all schools are the same.

Foreign students are important to colleges because they have to pay the most in tuitions and fees.

You got to look at college like you look at any business. It’s about money and reputation. If you get a bunch of dumb kids in a college that’s going to be the reputation and therefore decrease the perceived value of the tuition.

you first make references to testing/admission standard, and now optics
the optics of rich/famous white people bribing to get their privileged children into elite school

Did you read about the scandals. It wasn't just caucasian parents. The admission scandal was bought up, because you mentioned Asian kids and good schools. Tough getting into good schools, and when people look for reasons; so things like race and class are bought up. The original topic was what, a sly comment about many Asian scientists?

Think this detour has taken it's course. I'm gonna stop here.

It has nothing to do with Rockets fans
    @Clutch

tell me, how many of the posters do you ever see in the GARM?

One thing you should always expect on this section is nobody ever talks about the topic

If it's dumb kids of wealthy parents, admins will let then cut in line if the parents bribe with the backdoor handshake. That's not a bad rep for an admin who wants another billion added to the endowment fund.

I don't see that ending anytime soon.

People are fighting each other for the remaining spots. Throwing indirect shade in the process

Money gets you in any college
And colleges with big money have relationships with big companies and industries

it was > 40% when i was a student there, when UCI's then-Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Lin, was selected to be the Chancellor for the entire UC system.
UCI was derisively referred to as the University for Chinese Immigrants

The USC scandal is a good example about reputation and money
Those kids belong at Chico State
But their parents would be embarrassed In Beverly hills if their slacker kids went there
