Silver lining. This should free up some space on our FL beaches.

AG Ken Paxton continues to play political games that are costing lives, putting hundreds in the hospital, and thousands of Texans at risk. Some will have serious long-term health problems due to Covid-19. It is all in an attempt to curry favor with trump supporters. In doing so, he joins Governor Greg Abbott and Lt Governor Dan Patrick. The three continue to put Texans in danger from the pandemic, busy looking ahead to 2022 and the Republican primaries. They care nothing for Texans.

‘I will sue you’: Texas AG Ken Paxton gives City of Austin deadline to rescind mask mandate

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is threatening to sue the City of Austin, after the city decided to keep its mask mandate and COVID-19 orders in place despite Gov. Greg Abbott’s order to lift those protocols Wednesday statewide.

“You and local health authorities have until 6:00pm today to rescind any mask mandates or business-operating restrictions and come into full compliance with GA-34,” Paxton wrote on Twitter Wednesday. “Otherwise, on behalf of the State of Texas, I will sue you.”

He called out Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Andy Brown in the tweet. In a letter to Adler and Brown, Paxton said it’s not up to local jurisdictions to decide how businesses will operate. Under the new order, businesses are able to decide for themselves whether to require masks or capacity restrictions. In an interview with KXAN Tuesday, Adler said, “there’s two state laws in the health and safety code of the state, that specifically gives cities the ability to enforce laws reasonably necessary to protect the public health.”

This past July, Adler said they passed an ordinance that the local health authority will have the force of law in Austin and Travis County. You can watch the full interview with Adler below.

Austin City Council Member Greg Casar responded to Paxton’s tweet, saying, “while El Paso rolled out makeshift morgues, you sued them for protecting residents. While Texans froze in the dark, you fled the state for warmer weather. Now, you’re going out of your way (again) to win political points, even if it costs lives. We’ll see you in court.”

The City of Austin said right now, it has no plans to rescind the mask mandate, and Travis County officials said Judge Brown is in agreement with that. Additionally, rescinding the orders would require a vote from Travis County Commissioners Court.

You would think Ken Paxton might have other things to worry about but this shows again this is about distraction.

There's plenty of social distancing at T-Wolves games. Target Center is one place you can go if you don't want to be around people. :p

Paxton is a grade A scumbag. Between him, Abbott, Cruz and Dan Patrick, the state has the market cornered on cold-hearted, selfish leadership. It’s time for Texas to go blue. But, that would mean that everyone in this state actually evaluates poltical candidates on their merits instead of supporting their favorite team no matter what.

I've never been to Minneapolis, is it a nice place once you get past the civil unrest? Do you miss the humidity and potholes of Houston?

They all deserve to be behind bars for criminal negligence. They could care less how their reckless endangerment is going to spread Covid quicker while millions are still at risk. It's a stupid political stance, that in no way shape or form is based on anything medical experts would agree with.

In the summer we have plenty of humidity. 10,000 lakes don't lead to arid conditions.

As for potholes try them with a freeze thaw cycle.

Even if TX can't go blue howabout some Republicans who are concerned about more things than the next election and lining their own pockets? Howabout some Republicans who know that they shouldn't go on vacation while their state is in crisis? Howabout some Republicans that can stand on principle instead of whoever is popular in their party?

I wasn't a big fan of Kay Bailey Hutchinson but compared to the crowd now she is light years better.

Article loaded with gems worthy of the Onion, or Florida.

“In an interview Friday with Eyewitness News, White said she traveled to Galveston in an RV to cross off items off her bucket list. ...

She said she would have preferred to go through a drive-thru but couldn't with her RV.”

Whenever I read stuff like this I always wonder to extent to which somebody like Cornyn is genuinely stupid...or is just cynically playing to the rubes, or on the third freakish hand is so deep into his own bullshit that the whole question of whether what he says is true or not is simply not an epistemological issue that even exists for him any more.

Cornyn is not stupid, but 2 out of 3 gets you in the playoffs in every sport.

Florida and California have almost identical case rates and death rates from COVID. Florida has been free and California has been locked down. Intervention efforts have done basically nothing in California but wreck the economy and dramatically limit individuals' freedoms. How can anyone dispute this? The data is staring you right in the face. California locked people down, Florida lifted people up.

California and Florida both have a COVID-19 case rate of around 8,900 per 100,000 residents since the pandemic began, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And both rank in the middle among states for COVID-19 death rates—Florida was 27th as of Friday; California was 28th.
