Still waiting for that Oasis reunion. :(

But at least their solo stuff is getting better each album, especially Liam's.

I've been on a Joe Satriani kick recently as the MN Wild NHL team play Crowd Chant when the score.

I don't play like him as I'm a Les Paul player but listening to him is tempting me to buy one of his Ibanezs or a Kramer.

The original post is dated in 2000. 20 years later, as far as instrument playing bands... they are out there but definitely not as prominent as they used to be. Behind the lead vocal, the guitarist used to get exposure. "Lead guitarist gets the chicks" Maybe even get a a guitar solo section. A dude starts shredding.

Nowadays, it's maybe the producer, who can get second billing behind the main artist. As a selling point, their name sometimes on the song file, or in music video title.

There's something said about guitars or any instruments where people learned a skill. Genre dependent sure, but if a glance at billboard top 20; lot of the 'top' music are software driven. Modern music making is a lot about samples and beat machines. Instruments have their place in the production process, but more in the background. Guys like Kenny Beats or Metroboomin will play some instruments, record it, it just becomes a small ingredient in the overall mix.

This isn't to say new music is bad, but the skillset required in different areas are different now.

Tongue & cheek: what's the up and under on the following people, who can pick up and read a music sheet: Doja Cat, Post Malone, DJ Khaled, yes even Kanye.

Listen to japanese music :) been discovering that the newer bands from different genres still love the shred. It's somehow ingrained in pop culture there, and why mr big for example was a bigger deal in japan than the US. It's also common for instrument playing bands to get used in animes which help with international exposure.

I think a lot of their old rock/metal musicians became mainstream music producers too, so it's still common to hear guitar solos even in pop songs by idol groups. even marty friedman has been producing jpop for sometime now.

Was watching a documentary on Chicago. One of the band members was talking about one night after they were playing at Whiskey a Go Go on Sunset Blvd when he got a tap on his shoulder. He said he turned around as he was putting one of his saxophones away and it was Jimi Hendrix. He said he called him by name and said "Walt, the horns are like one set of lungs. You're guitar player's better than me."

Loughnane, one of the founding members said Terry could play a rhythm guitar part, a lead guitar part, and sing a lead vocal simultaneously. He said he's never heard anybody that could do that.
