Our understanding of biracial identity is awful and this thread is yet more evidence of it. My child is biracial and it honestly worries me constantly that our understanding of race is so poor that he'll eventually have conversations where he'll have to "pick a side." There's nothing wrong for people who are biracial to shift identities. We literally defined America based on racial identities (slavery, segregation, etc..) and identifying with both racial identities (as many biracial people tend to do) isn't odd. The only thing that's odd is that we force people to pick. My child is biracial (as will any future children that we have). It is crushing to think that a society can't accept that it is possible for him to have a more complex understanding of race and his identity than the dumb "pick a side" mentality that seems to be so prevalent. This thread tells me little about Meghan but it says a lot about the OP.
