Dredd is on Prime at the moment. Was very pleasantly surprised to see it flash across the screen. Watched for the 20th time last night. Still an 8/10
just saw the game plan 10/10 such an elegant masterpiece. the attention to detail on the contrast between the game of football and personal life is like nothing I've ever seen before. makes any given sunday and remember the titans look like the room.
Cherry Standard war junkie flick with emotional overtones. Tom Holland was fantastic, dude really went method for this role. Ciara Bravo looked way too young but pulls off some great scenes in the fourth act. Pretty solid movie and it got me laid 6.8/10
tried to rewatch Windtalkers last night, it really doesn't hold up very well--I remember liking it when it came out, far too slow and the action sequences look really really fake--like bad 50s era war movies. skipped ahead pretty much through the whole thing. so maybe a 4/10 switched over to We Were Soldiers, which is on amazon prime until the end of the month. in contrast, really holds up well. 9/10
Rented News of the World at Redbox. I'd give it a 9 out of 10. It's the best movie I've seen in awhile. Tom Hanks is great as always playing his role. Great story and good drama.
We saw an older movie on Prime called The Book of Henry (6 of 10). Naomi Watts as the mom and the boy playing the title character were excellent, the rest of the cast was made-for-TV level. The story is about a genius kid (does his mom's financial planning) and his single-mom (plays video games). Mostly formula but Watts and the boy manage to carry the movie through.
Saw The Courier last weekend, really enjoyed it from start to finish. Benedict Cumberbatch is really in it but so is Merab Ninidze who plays the Russian contact. If you like cold war spy thrillers, this is one of the better ones. A-
Wander - 7/10 A low budget flick with Aaron Eckhart doing his best Christian Bale "Batman" voice, Tommy Lee Jones playing the role of a grumpy old codger (big stretch, I know), and Heather Graham. I read the synopsis (below), saw it was just a 99 cent rental and rolled the dice. It wasn't great or big on surprises, but the cast saved it. Hired to investigate a suspicious death in the town of Wander, a paranoid private eye with a troubled past becomes convinced the case is linked to the same conspiracy and cover-up that caused the death of his daughter.
watched Rushmore, has seven more days on amazon prime. Fantastic. better than I remembered. Jason Schwartzman is hilarious, Bill Murray his usual solid performance. 9/10
Finally watched Joker 7/10 it was a good to great movie for what it tried to be but it was not very engrossing as a stand alone movie in my opinion. Loved what JP did in the role and liked the journey to get there but for some reason I was not that excited about anything, I really did not like how they ended Thomas Wayne it was too on the nose. With that said I would love for JP to continue playing the Joker in Batman films and I think Pattinson and him would be good together in a film, I think he could give Ledger a run as the best Joker.
watched The Beast last night since so many people have mentioned it here. Decent film, dragged a bit early on but finishes strong. The American accents of the Russian tank crew were pretty distracting, but I guess that's how the film got made in 1988. Probably a 7.5 out of 10. on amazon prime
I finally got around to watching Man of Steel, and man, wish I had seen it in theaters. The CGI puts 2021 CGI to shame. The action is what you'd expect out of two gods fighting it out in a city. A+ I then watched Batman v Superman to see if it was a good sequel. Lots of things to like here, visuals are all great (except the design of doomsday), plenty of good emotional scenes. I appreciate Batman just killing dudes left and right. Lex wasn't as annoying as I thought he'd be. And yet...something feels hollow and missing here. B
Bad Trip - (netflix) A Hidden camera prank show woven into a road trip movie plot. Eric Andre and Tiffany Haddish. Some of the gags are very gross and rated R; could hit or miss depending on one's sensibilities. Grade B
Watched Coming 2 America and not nearly as good as the original. Wesley Snipes did a good job as a crazy African dictator and props to a Mutumbo cameo but otherwise just not that funny.
