Cartoons under attack again: Pepe Le Pew canceled claiming he's a 'rapist'

I love the cartoons, but the stalking and sexual assault going on in a children's cartoon is disturbing.

 

Pepe is a bit of a b@stard. That poor cat.

 

I never liked pepe le pew much. It was a dumb cartoon. That being said, this stupidity is getting out of hand. So many people in this world need something to do with their lives.

 

Probably true, if you saw a comedian from the 20s....we probably wouldn't get half the jokes either..

not true at all. With a 20’s comedian, you will probably get every joke and laugh at none of them. Horrible stand up back then. However, it is true that what was funny to people long ago isn’t usually funny to them now.

I think a good example is 70’s SNL. Funny then? yes. Still funny 25 years ago? Meh. Funny now? No.

I know someone will defend early SNL but its not really the point. It was great then but wouldn’t work today.

 

This is why my kids will only be allowed to watch the Simpsons.

Once they’re like 14 they can upgrade to South Park.

I need to have kids first though. And that sounds like an awful plan.

 

It's interesting how we transition from "This cartoon is totally fine for kids" to "This cartoon was kind of messed up if you think about it, lol" to "This cartoon is dangerous and must be banned", and with the last step cause half the country to return to "This cartoon is TOTALLY FINE."

 

Lol. Maybe parents should teach their children instead of letting cartoons do all the raising.

 

Smart for conservatives to go all in cartoons instead of acknowledging Covid, or inequality, or issues that affect Americans.

I wondered. I remember the big anti-p*rnography movement of the 1980s — and how it was squelched — and I thought it is due for a comeback. We're censoring Dr. Seuss books for minor racial improprieties, but the monumental misogyny problems of p*rnography are ignored.

So I looked to see if there were signs of a resurgence of the anti-p*rnography movement, and I found this (from a few days ago, at Vox): "This week in TikTok: The problem with the 'Cancel p*rn' movement/On TikTok, it’s impossible to have a nuanced discussion about sex work."

Apparently, there's enough of a new movement that Vox needs to instruct us about what's wrong with it. If there's a resurgence there's also a squelching of the resurgence, off and running.

Notice that Vox's problem with it is structured as feminism — helping sex workers? — but that's how the squelching of the 1980s movement worked too. It was packaged as feminism. What's different now: There's TikTok, and the activists are teenagers reaching teenagers.

Here's #cancelporn if you want to educate yourself about how this movement is taking off.

ADDED: Here's a Reddit discussion from January: "I'm very worried about the #cancelporn movement on TikTok." The worry expressed is that it will be used "to shame sex workers and generally safe ways of sex work."

Someone there says: "I wouldn't worry too much, the p*rn industry is one of the largest in the world and there's no chance in hell that a bunch of TikTok cringe artists are going to have any sort of actual impact."

That roughly corresponds to something I was thinking. You can't pressure p*rn businesses if they are nothing but p*rn. It's not like demanding some publishing company take out a book here and there or movie company cancel some of its productions. If the questionable material is only a part of a business, there is leverage to pressure the business.

So the "Cancel p*rn" movement will need a different strategy. What I would expect to see is young people, especially women, staunchly disapproving of people who consume p*rn and declining to be in a relationship with a p*rn user. Boycott the users.

They only care about things that don't have a pulse or heartbeat, unless it's themselves.

 

A possible defensive excuse in the event of rural racial homicides. I think it was a component used in Georgia Jogger case.

 

While I agree but we also need to stop trying to with the think pieces looking at things in the past through the lens of today.

Can we also stop with people trying to make a name by being the 1st to Cancel something.
