Talladega wasn't a horrendous movie, but if you saw the trailers for it, 99% of the actually funny parts were given away.

    I would go with 1939:

    "Gone With the Wind"
    "Wizard of Oz"
    "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"
    "Wuthering Heights"
    "Ninotchka"
    "Of Mice and Men"
    "Stagecoach"
    "Goodbye Mr. Chips"
    "The Women"

All of these are classics that still hold up nearly 70 years later. I haven't seen others from this year that are supposed to be great like "Young Mr. Lincoln" with Henry Fonda, "Only Angels Have Wings," an action film starring Cary Grant and "Destry Rides Again" with the great Marlene Dietrich.

Yeah, that's why I try to avoid trailers today. They give way too much away. I think I saw the trailer for it once and then didn't even see it in theaters. It wasn't until much later that I saw it, so I loved it.

1999 for real, taking this seriously now
http://us.imdb.com/List?year=1984&&...ing=7;Most popular titles;1984 by total votes

The Matrix at the time sent my heart a'flutter. Fight Club straight blew me away. And they threw in a brand new Star Wars movie on top of that :D ?? AND some James Bond (World is Not Enough)
Then there quality movies of different interesting varieties and genres, freakin comedies galore. some already listed:
    - America Pie
    - Sixth Sense
    - Blair Witch Project
    - Bowfinger
    - South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut
    - Office Space
    - Duece Bigalow
and a couple football movies tossed in, Any Given Sunday & Varsity Blues. I couldnt ask for much more in a year. It all came together, dvds and home theater systems to watch all the previous years great movies, the yeeaar 2000 (Y2K!) was highly anticipated as some great event. Partying like it was 1999, great times....

I saw this movie last night for the first time as an adult. Hmm, so the secret of his success was boning his uncle's wife, who happened to be some rich chick that put him down? Ok, I can understand him boning before he knew who she was...but afterwards....

I gotta go with the year that these 3 came out (The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump). That year may not have had as many good movies, but the top 3 are in the GOAT convo....kinda reminds me of the 84 draft...

Man...this is a no contest for me.

Shawshank Redemption - Possibly my favorite film of all time.
    Pulp Fiction - Top 20
    Forrest Gump - Top 20
    Hoop Dreams - Favorite documentary
Lion King - Favorite animated movie and probably one of my top 10 movies.

Throw in a some random good comedies/action/drama(Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber, Speed, True Lies) and you have the greatest year EVER in movies.

The period between 1990 and 1995 is ridiculously good.

1991, because I remember that summer fondly (well, more for SFII...). But based on the strength of #1 movie that year alone gets the year a seat at the table:

    1 Terminator 2: Judgment Day $204.46 07/03/91 $31.77 6.44
    2 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves $164.25 06/14/91 $25.63 6.41
    3 Beauty and the Beast $144.75 11/13/91 $9.62 15.05
    4 The Silence of the Lambs $130.73 02/13/91 $13.77 9.49
    5 City Slickers $120.82 06/07/91 $13.03 9.27
    7 The Addams Family $113.38 11/22/91 $24.20 4.69
    9 Father of the Bride $89.10 12/20/91 $7.00 12.73
    13 Backdraft * $77.48 05/24/91 $15.72 4.93
    15 Star Trek VI $74.74 12/06/91 $18.16 4.12

    (Honorable mention for Jennifer Connolly...)
    27 The Rocketeer $46.57 06/21/91 $9.60 4.85

Since we're talking movies lately, and it's been 14 years since this thread started....

    Is 1984 still king?

Maybe it should be the year this did not win best original score Oscar (or, the true travesty, best song):

But can’t really argue with who won:

    Other notable nominee:

I was joking about dances with wolves. But no lie when I posted that I was watching exorcist 3 on Amazon which was 1990. Side note wtffff is Fabio and Patrick Ewing in that movie for? I didn’t remember them in that at all.
