    They live on an isolated island... with easily traced and well established population centers. It is a whole lot easier to control it in that scenario.

    I had to deal with Australians in a job scenario. They can come across as very condescending. I wasn't the only person who thought so

    they don't put Gorilla glue in their hair or hate on the Muppets or try to ban Grand Theft Auto

    They know the difference between industrial grade glue, kids shows from the 80s, and an open world video game set in a modern era
    @J.R.

    Oh they know what to do about viruses that are contagious

    and they don't go robbing people of their dogs

    I know this, you know this.

    I bet you the majority of people who post on social media know can't find Australia on a map.

    Sad state of affairs in this world, today where there's a low quality of education for the youth.

    You haven't seen many of these posters? that's because THEY DON'T POST ABOUT THE ROCKETS EVER.

    Somebody call Godzilla to reset this thing

    It is but don't sell them short. They did things the US would have never considered doing. I work with a lot of Australians who have been quite proud of their government and are always reminding me how different life is for them right now.

    1. In addition to standard shutdowns of business, they shut down interstate travel. People were barred from crossing state lines during the height of the pandemic. Airlines, buses and trains were grounded entirely and highways that crossed states were actively policed.

    2. Travel was essentially halted to and from Australia with the mandatory hotel quarantine implemented early on. The big thing that the quarantine did was that it completely dis-incentivized leaving the country. Plus international flights were eventually grounded entirely as well so there really wasn't a way to leave.

    3. Their lockdowns were much harsher than other countries. During lockdown, citizens were limited to as little as a 5km radius (depending on where you lived). Essential workers had to carry special permits to allow them to go out and would face huge fines if they didn't have the permits. Public gatherings were fully banned and the curfew was at 9pm (with many businesses forced to close even earlier).

    But beyond those things, Australia had covid tests available to the public much earlier than the US (with faster test results) and they had armies of contact tracers from the beginning (so they could isolate potentially infected people within hours of a postive test). And the biggest thing is that there were no big partisan battles there. Both parties voted together on almost everything there which led to more acceptance of their very strict lockdown rules.

    Of all of those things, their biggest success was the fact that their response to Covid was non-partisan. Both parties listened to the experts and passed legislation to do the right thing.

    I'm sorry that your limited experience with a select few people from Australia wasn't pleasant. My limited experience with a select few people from Australia and travel to Australia has been quite different.
