The Rockets should have kept Allen and dealt him at the deadline. Silas didn’t want another 5, as he wants Wood as his 5. So the Rockets brought in Oladipo. Tilman got out of Prince’s money and the Rockets got the Bucks #1. The Allen trade and decision to bring in Oladipo isn’t so bad if Opadipo had played well and had netted the Rockets a pair of #1’s at the deadline. However that isn’t happening. The Rockets aren’t likely getting anything of any real value for Oladipo... Tucker isn’t likely to bring much either. Let’s hope we win the lottery coin flip and keep our pick and draft someone with promise. What a train wreck of 12 months by Tilman....
it wasn't so much about Silas not wanting another 5. that would be a basketball decision. this was not a basketball decision. the rockets do not make decisions based on a silly game like basketball. it was tilman not wanting to take back any money on the books past this season. they had to move prince and the only way to do it was with Allen. they could've just kept prince and Allen, but that would also mean committing to paying Allen as a FA next summer which tilman can't afford. so they chose to get an additional pick under cheap contract for 4 more years. same with Levert for oladipo. they gave up a second round pick to make the swap. what rebuilding team parts with picks to shed salary? we should be charging picks to take on bad salary. every other team in the league would've kept Allen even if it meant eating prince's contract. we needed to resign Allen. who cares if we just signed wood? that's the same logic as drafting for need over picking the best player available. we need talent, we had to hold onto him. and by the way Allen and wood can play together. split the center minutes 24/24 and play them together for half a quarter and that's 30mpg each. done. big deal 6 minutes of twin towers with one who can spread the floor is not going to make us any worse than we are right now. if we had both locked up we could look to move one for a high lotto pick in the future, or for a young future star at another position other than center. but to get rid of him just to save money is not trying to win. its not a basketball move. its not even an attempt at hiding the fact that the rockets just do not think about basketball when making roster decisions. if they wanted to they could've used expiring contracts to take on Blake in exchange for Detroit unprotecting a few years of the pick they gave us. that would be a winning move. this was not a winning move or a basketball move.
The problem is we have not done a good job at all with asset collection either. We maybe got 25 cents on the dollar on the Harden trade, almost feels like we just dumped a bad contract, but in reality he is a top 5 player in the league.
who said it means youre forced to committing to pay Allen in the summer? You're not. The point of keeping Allen is the same thing they're doing with Dipo. But Allen is actually much younger and has much better upside that can play every night and contribute, who can land you more than a pathetic late bucks pick they settled with.
technically you're right they wouldn't have been forced to commit to pay Allen this summer, but if you keep him after the harden trade, there is no reason to let him walk for nothing in return.
Went right over Stone and Silas' head obviously. Interestingly enough, Morey had his eye on him last season.
Yup and that is what a handful of us said at the time. When the Allen to Cleveland part of the deal was announced the reasoning was clearly financial (Don’t have to pay Prince) but it also was clear Allen could be moved by the deadline. The fact that the Rockets would take back minimal salary and none long term in the Harden deal was obvious based on the owner.
Other teams want assets too. Being cheap is part of it but not all of it guys. lol It was a multi-team deal. Not hard to figure it out. Stop making it bigger than what it is, and looking for a reason Harden didn't want to be here. He just didn't want to be here, PERIOD.
