Meh. This was never meant to be. We took a flyer on a formerly great player to see what he had left. Compare his play this year to highlights of his earlier years and it's obvious he's lost most of his quickness and nearly all of his lift. Back in the day, he was impossible to guard; now he's not good enough to expect starter minutes, especially on a mostly switching-defense team. Low risk, high reward. By guaranteeing his contract, Stone is trying to set a tone that his culture will be different than the "assets"-driven one that Morey (unfairly) was known for. Convincing Tilman might have taken some effort, but "I guarantee you won't pay any luxury tax this year" seems to soothe any Fertitta wounds.
I honestly am struggling to find a reason why any team would pick him up. Everyone has seen enough at this point. His on court production has dipped to replacement level or lower, he is a liability with his temper in high leverage situations and I’d find it hard to believe he’s regarded as a guy to keep around as the “locker room” guy. Sometimes injuries are just too much to overcome.
