I like John Collins a lot, but I don't see him as a good fit with Wood. Both of them have range out to three, but they need to score primarily in the interior. Part of Collins' lower scoring this year is because his PNR opportunities with Trae Young have been reduced with Capela's presence. That wouldn't change here next to Wood, although he'd have more space to finish inside because Wood has range that Capela lacks. Collins is also not great defensively on the perimeter and is not a great passer, both of which are also Wood's weaknesses. He's just too similar to Wood and they don't complement each other very much. The cost of acquiring him would be high and the cost to retain him in FA would also be high, probably a max contract. I don't see him as an all-NBA type player so I think we'd be better served looking at other trade targets that are compatible with Wood.
I disagree and I’m usually a homer. I think that’s a good sign that the Rockets have the assets to get him if they want him. He’s still young and the Rockets have a top of the line development staff now with Silas . I would be very confident with KPJ (20), Wood (25) and Collins (23) going forward with lots of draft assets remaining.
We control Washington’s pick future, unless they wanted to offer a totally naked 2021 pick. Given their record, I can’t imagine they’d risk a top 3 pick...
I agree in normal situations but they have a superstar who wants a reason to stay. They would be doubling down. Collins is unique in how valuable he is yet for this season he’s financially easy to trade for. Wizards could think by adding him they can win enough to get into the playoff picture. Beal would be being sold essentially.
Collins is worth trying to acquire. A true ascending young talent, hard to believe Atlanta let’s him go cheap. But no one talks about the supposed attitude issues; I don’t think u pay Atlanta’s asking price. Collins and Wood would be a formidable young front court; both can space the floor with their shooting. but we’re probably better off signing him in free agency than trading assets fir the right to overpay him.
He is worth a bet. Not many young, athletic, skilled PFs that can rebound well, shoot 40% from 3 and rim protect. He is definitely not a certainty as a max player, but he fits the profile of the type of bet we should be considering. His max salary is $31m per year, if we could get him for $27-28m, I’d be interested. His current play is already worth $22-25m, won’t require too much improvement on his behalf to make a near-max contract fair value.
I do think a core of him, Wood and KPJ while retaining the other picks and the other players sans PJ, would make for a good balance of moderately competitive now and for the future. Getting Collins would completely change my view of this team’s path.
I like the guy. BUT - he would cost Dipo Dollars to retain. BUT - the problem with that is he would wind up with @2x Wood $$$ and that might sit very wrong on CWoo. Big? I think Maark could be had and could do well, and fit in fine.
I do like Collins but this is my concern too. While I don't think Woods is untouchable or is automatically our franchise player (I call him our blue chip prospect), the fit is a bit shakey. If Collins was more of a combo wing instead of a combo forward, then it wouldn't be a question. Regardless, it would be prudent to see what it would take to get him.
I think people gloss over the attitude issues because he's playing with a no defense scrub PG who thinks he's Curry. Hard to be happy with that guy on your squad
Can’t be worrying about Wood being insecured about a contract he negotiated and signed. We offered him more than any other team did. He should be gratefull and fulfill his obligations
I don't see us getting Collins or anyone that will cost this team money at the deadline. This team is probably in cost cutting mode around the deadline and will be doing a bit of a 'fire sale' to offload some of our bigger contracts and vets for low cost young players and future draft picks.
