Next year is the year they have to try and cut payroll, and that is if they continue the current CBA rules. They were in a really good position to offer Bauer the contract they did. If he doesn't opt out though, it would be hard to keep Seager and Kershaw.

Never did I say they should spend that kind of money. In fact I was for them not paying Springer. What I have said is I think they've misused the funds they've had available.

    You tell me?

I know what he's done since he was hired.

    Not much at all.

Are you happy with what Click has done with the funds he's had available?

I dont get how you guys can keep defending Click after seeing how a championship team should really be run.

You wrote "in two years" with respect to Click's tenure with the Astros. He has been with the Astros 12 months and a couple of weeks.

Kevin Pillar to the Mets. Hopefully they're out on JBJ. What teams still needs a CF?

Phillies, Indians, Giants are decent teams that need a CF. Diamondbacks are a decent fit imho. Reds wouldn’t be a total shock. But if he wants to be the everyday CF for a true contender then the Astros are by far the best fit, assuming they even have an offer out.

2 things that help the Astros have a better shot at JBJ-

Pillar signing likely takes the Mets out of the CF market.

Also makes JBJ more likely to take a short term deal. If he decides to take a short term deal, more likely he would want to play for a contender.

My honest opinion- JBJ either signs with us or goes back to Boston.

How have they misused funds? They are paying Baez the same amount of $$ guys like Joe Smith, Rondon, Pressly, W. Harris earned in years past. They got Brantley back on a very good deal and besides that haven’t spent anything substantial.

Had a fantastic draft, Had a fantastic international signing period. Re-signed an all-star LF’er, provided much needed depth to the pen. Not much more that could be done with so many guaranteed roster spots already in place.

Makes me wonder if the Mets are going to move Nimmo or Dom Smith in a deal for Kris Bryant. Why sign both Almora and Pillar when they have Conforto, Dom Smith, Nimmo, and Jose Martinez?

Overpaid for depth in the pen and the backup C position.

Left a huge hole in CF and is left hoping a bunch of starters that haven't proven they can hold up to a 162 game season can be better than they were in a 60 game season. Joy, fact is in 2 seasons if you want to call last season a season the team has regressed under Click's watch regardless of the excuses that are made for him. He's got alot riding on the Leon signing, he needs to be a version of Tucker with the ability to play CF. I like the Santos draft pick, he's young talented and doesn't seem to have the wear and tear on his arm that most young guys do. Who else do you like that was a IFA/Draft Pick.

Yes Click could've had a much better offseason.

But it's only been 1 season and they came within 1 win of the World Series in a very weird year.

Would you rather have Colome for his money or Baez for his and being able to spend the money left over on an upgrade in CF. I dont count Brantley as a move because I thought Click would choose between Springer or Brantley. Click made the right choice. IMHO

When signing/overpaying 2 yrs on Castro is your big offseason move you know you've failed.

Some of y’all seem dead set on hating Click no matter what he does. We were all spoiled with Luhnow for the past several years. He was widely regarded as one of, if not the, best GMs in baseball. Of course Click isn’t gonna come in and be Luhnow from day one. But my goodness give him a chance. He couldn’t do anything substantial last offseason because of how late he joined the team before Spring Training. Then his first full offseason is the offseason where spending is down across the board due to COVID-related revenue loss.

Springer was assuredly gone even if Luhnow was still here. Click upgraded the bullpen. He re-signed one of the most consistent LF in the game and an absolutely integral part of our lineup to a relatively solid deal. He upgraded the backup catcher spot. And he’s left himself enough room to either go get JBJ on a one-year deal or trade for someone mid season if we need upgrades at SP or CF.

I feel like every offseason (and I’m guilty of it too) we come into it with this massive dream wishlist of what we want our team to do. All these moves (whether big or small) and sometimes that’s just not realistic.

If we have a failure of a season and the reasons can rationally and legitimately me attributed to Click, then he’ll deserve the criticism, but I’m not sure how anyone can rationally criticize him at this point given all the extenuating circumstances surrounding his first offseason as GM.

    1. I was in favor of Click being hired when the list of names the Astros were looking at for GM was reported.

    2. I'm not a big fan of the Baez and Castro moves. I also don't like what CF looks like heading into spring training.

Nobody's calling for his job or anything. I would have preferred the money was spent differently. We don't have to kiss his a$$ 24/7. If you love the Baez and Castro moves to go along with Straw as your starting CFer then cool... I don't. I wanted someone with closer experience. Steve Cishek was not who I had in mind.

I also wanted Pillar. Will be interested to see how much he got from the Mets.

I wasn't asking for outlandish moves.

That’s completely fair. I also would’ve loved Pillar if the price turns out to be really reasonable.I just don’t understand the opinion some people have of “he’s been a complete failure this offseason”. I mean, it’s their opinion and they could turn out to be completely right, but I’m always the type to say let’s give him the benefit of the doubt until we no longer have any reason to do so.

I would have re-signed Springer, but I can't judge a gm off one off-season with a limited budget.
