no seems like he’s living rent free in y’all’s head because a lot of y’all care a lot more about DW than the Texans. it’s like your comment who cares on the why or how? Um .. if you’re a fan of THE TEXANS and not individual players you should care immensely. Because a DW demanding location a or b gets way less in return. the front office is what it is. It doesn’t matter how much y’all b**** about Easterby. He’s only getting fired if y’all stop watching and going to games... and guess what, that’s not happening. The Texans will still draw immense viewership, etc. What’s relevant here is how do the Texans win a SB? If it involves trading DW, for whatever reason, it needs to be to the Jets for a mega package. Otherwise there should be no trade. the sad part is all the complaining about the front office is going to have the exact effect that makes you complain about the front office more. It’s like none of y’all have ever dealt with a personality lien Cal. You think he’s all of a sudden going to fire Easterby? No... he’s going to dig in further and is now more likely to trade DW for **** to, in his head, “move on from the fiasco”... Hopefully Casiero isn’t an idiot and hopefully not forced to do that by Cal. But y’all got to understand how a dude like Cal works. He’s not going to be shamed into firing Easterby. He’s a billionaire that doesn’t care, and the fact he inherited his billions and getting shat on is likely to just make him say “**** y’all, I’m trading him for a bag of chips”. Their position to DW and his agents should be 100% clear. The Jets for mega haul or sit out as long as you want. As you noted he can sit out a year and still command multiple firsts. And his contract will still have the same length left it will just have rolled forward a year.
If y’all care so much about the Texans, then why aren’t you pushing for a change for the owners and the front office? You are more up in Deshaun’s business than the Texans actually making changes for the better. The dysfunction is easily worse now than it was when he signed the contract. oh he lied... wah, wah. JJ left, Foster is speaking out, AJ is speaking out, Watson wants out. but yes, let’s hold DW4 accountable to honor his contract, release JJ but at the same time not honor other contracts that we signed (if and when we get a great deal on them). haha, you said BOB only got fired cos JK spoke out about him. Well, I guess the whole damn team is complicit with Easterby. The Texans ownership OWE the city of Houston a lot more than DW4 does.
for one... you don’t understand how nfl contracts work. They’re non guaranteed. That’s how the players negotiated them. for two, money talks. Change will only come if you/Texans fans stop watching them and caring about them in droves. By the masses. That isn’t happening. Reliant will still sell out (post covid), there will still be a waiting list for psl’s, etc lots of Rockets fans b****ed about the Rockets this offseason. Those same fans are still in the main room and I’d say a majority of them, recognizing the team is worse, nonetheless are enjoying the different team, think Stone has done a great job and are generally more positive on Silas then negative. With an owner we can still all agree sucks. this is fandom. Team fans root for the team, for the most part, through owners, cultures, etc. some come and go with their favorite players. That’s a small group. Some ultimately give up on fandom cause they’re upset. That’s a smaller group and fans that didn’t care that much anyway. And when it comes to the NFL, for whatever reason in America right now, those are very small groups.
I gotta say, not only has DW has done more for the Texans to be successful on the field than Cal, he’s also been more successful as a football player than Cal as an owner. The During Carl’s reign as owner, the Texans brand has been tarnished from its already mediocre status under his father.
No, some just want to burn it down and start over anew. They aren't going to win anything with or without Watson for at least the next 5 years.
Kinda strange that he'd be more willing to stay now. Everything that's happened since he's requested a trade has been even worse, imo. People getting canned, Watt getting released, etc. On top of all that, a dude who had a falling out with his coach / franchise just won the whole thing BECAUSE he didn't wanna be in NE anymore. I know it's not the same situation as it was with Brady, but sometimes, all it takes is one match to start a wildfire.
Has he posted a music lyric or meme or IG story since the official trade request was released? sorta makes sense now that the Texans may have actually leaked that in an attempt to regain control of the narrative.
I think most here wish Cal sold the team? but there's little fans can do about that. Fans are just stuck with Cal. The most we can hope for is that Easterby adn Caserio are just geniuses, assholes but geniuses, and will get the franchise going in the right direction. I mean hey, the stros had an ******* or two in their FO... but there isn't much chance of that going by what we know. So, there isn't much fans can do. We could stop going to games etc etc and then lose the team as a result. I don't think there is much chance of that happening to be fair (Probably more likely someone moves to Austin...) but fans just have nothing to do with how much the Texans suck.
Can someone familiar with generally how these contracts work and DW's in particular explain exactly how punitive it would be for him if the stalemate continued through the season? He would get fined (how much and how often?) and future paychecks withheld, but would he still end up a net positive from this contract to that point if in the unlikely event Texans tried to call his bluff, but he stuck to his guns throughout the entire season? I would assume his signing bonus will dwarf whatever possible fines could be accumulated even in an entire year- beyond that and future paychecks withheld, can they come after what has already been paid to him? If so he might would have to come in, and half ass it à la harden, or nurse an ambiguous injury, do the bare minimum to get his checks but let it be known I'm not really here. A much harder strategy, especially for someone like Watson to stomach. The rest of it I'm not worried about, different types of fandom or what anyone considers "right/wrong", only cause & effect per the contract.
No, they aren’t going to win anything with Easterby and Cal! EVER. So all of your “ Watson trade” scenarios really don’t matter at all. They want to build THE Easterby Church not a winning NFL Football team. Some of you still think that this is still about football and this is something completely different.
Agreed But this culture existed long before Easterby arrived. Easterby is just a tool to carry out Cal's wishes. The Church of the Houston Texans has always existed it's just more out in the open with a clueless guy like Cal now running things.
I think some of y’all are too invested in the dysfunction to be able to separate the fact that all kinds of different cultures can win. And I can’t believe I’ve had to type this multiple times because I generally do not like religion. But I dont think the religious aspect has much impact on whether or not they can field a SB winning team. I think it’s the dysfunction of Easterby and Cal not the dysfunction PLUS the religious-ness. I mean I look at Tom Brady. The dude was a big Trump friend and mags dude. By all accounts, in the NFL, that should have created intensely toxic locker room environments. long story short... if the Texans won the division last year we wouldn’t be hearing very much about Easterby’s toxicity or Cal’s ineptitude. Because that’s what happened the year before. Sure we’d know about it just like we knew about it already or we knew about Brady’s Trump friendship or Krafts happy endings but it wouldn’t be super relevant to the team on the field.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.espn.com/blog/houston-texans/post/_/id/25529/what-happens-if-houston-texans-qb-deshaun-watson-decides-to-sit-out?platform=amp this gives you the details. long story short the Texans currently have DW locked up if they want through 2028. Cause they can franchise tag him 3x in a row after his extension expires. if DW holds out he gets fined more and more. I “think” this fine is voluntary and the Texans can decide not to fine him. If he holds out all season it’s basically as if we just pretend this season didn’t happen... and the Texans wound then have his rights locked up till 2029. the Texans also have to take a much bigger 2021 cap hit if they trade him before June 1. Which to me is probably a positive. It gives them more leverage with DW and his agents and opposing teams. “You guys want to be traded now? Well take a huge cap hit. We need even more back...”. To which they might say “nah were good trade is June 2” to which the obvious response is “um, the draft happened months ago... so yeah that’s a dumb idea we might as well just wait till the end of this season again”. no doubt the Texans are in a tough spot. DW has a lot of “player leverage”. At some point the Texans are going to want to have great players again and you do t want to be that “dick” organization that “holds the line”. But the Texans have a lot of leverage in that they CAN do that and it’s pretty detrimental to DW. The biggest impact not being financial but just in playing. DW wants to be an all time great. Missing “a” season won’t be the end of the world if it comes to that in a league where great QBs can now play into their late 30s/early 40s. And it’s almost impossible to envision a scenario where DW sits all year and we’re at this impasse again next offseason and the Texans CONTINUE to be like “nope, you either report and play your best or you can keep sitting out” But to me, as a TEXANS fan and not a DW only fan, that’s what they have to threaten... in a friendly manner. “Hey, we don’t want to be dicks, but everything was great back before you signed your extension, Easterby was here, Hopkins had been traded already by BOB who you loved. And you still committed to us for a long time. Sure this season sucked but we involved you in the Gm process. Sorry you didn’t like our hire but Korn-Ferry is hit or miss and basically only suggested their circle of clients and wouldn’t even look into guys we suggested. Their coach suggestion wasn’t great and we know you liked EB but he interviewed horribly and oh btw looked what happened to their offense once injuries caused talent to decline just a little bit. Not just for us but for every team he’s interviewed for. If you want to be traded now, we need to do it before the draft and we need a mega haul. The Jets package is what we need - 4 firsts, a couple seconds and Williams. We are happy to work with you and your agents to push this through but a trade now is a huge cap hit for us”. at the same time they need to do a better job on the PR front themselves. This is tricky as pretty much 95% of PR out there right now is how shitty they are organizationally. And their PR can’t be aggressive “f you, you signed the contract!!” But they’d benefit from a PR campaign that just notes the obvious. Basically a soft repeat of what I said above. Kind of a “hey we’re trying to work with him but what do you want us to do? He’s one of the best QBs in the league that any team would be stupid to give up that just committed to our franchise for years and years a few months ago. Now that he all of a sudden wants out we’re trying our best to work with him. We’ve tried to involve him in executive hires. We personally love the GM and coaching hire combination in place and think if he gave it a chance he’d see we are pointing in the right direction. But if he keeps on insisting he needs to be traded or will sit we will do our best to find a package with a return worthy of his incredible skill and ability, given the recent returns we’ve seen for much lesser talents, but if we can’t get that return we’re just going to have to hold him. And we’ll have to do that indefinitely until we can get a return package worthy of his skill and the length of his contract.“
Keep telling yourself this my friend. Did you see the HC hire? How about the way they bungled the GM search? They ARE STUPID! And a whole lot of things were already in place when they won the division the last time. ALL Pro talent has left the barn since then. This Easterby Church culture is not going to win. A ton of talent on & off the field has been fired or has decided to walk. A lot of them have been replaced by figureheads and cronies so that the Easterby maintains power. The culture IS ALREADY toxic and word spreads fast. How are you going to draw top level free agents who are interested in winning? You can overpay guys but the guys who can get similar money elsewhere will. Same with good assistants. And I guarantee you that Tom Brady isn't pushing Trump in rally circles in the locker room either. No one cares because everyone knows that at the end of the day that Tom is about NFL football. Championship NFL Football. The Texans don't have football people doing football things. This environment is about one NON FOOTBALL guy maintaining power in what should be a Football centric situation. Cal is a cheese brained kiddo who's billionaire daddy left him in charge of something that is beyond his understanding. Easterby has made Cal McNair & the Texans the laughingstocks of the NFL. It pisses me off so bad. They really deserve 0-16.
they’ve always been stupid. They kept Bill O’Brien for 6+ years. The fact that they hired Casiero over the Korn Ferry suggestions doesn’t make them stupid. The fact that they hired Korn Ferry in the first place is what made them stupid. You saw who Korn Ferry thought they should hire as coach yes? Lol. In fact Casiero has generally been super highly thought of. He certainly had an incredibly successful run in NE. But the fact that he’s actually qualified has been looked over because of the whole “fiasco”. I’m not saying Casiero was my first choice. I don’t care for the Patriots connection given how that’s not typically been a successful path so far for most. But he’s as qualified any ex Patriots front office dude that’s left the Patriots as anyone has previously. the locker room doesn’t care about Tom Brady’s maga views cause he wins. The end. It’s not because he’s “all about football”. Cause nobody is all about football. Sports locker rooms conversations don’t exclusively include only talk about that sport. See the Colin K saga. Does that mean Tom is pushing maga policies in the locker room? Of course not... but of course if Tom wasn’t the GOAT and walked around wearing maga hats the teammates reactions would be way way different. Heck the NFL had a “secret” meeting with players and owners about how to deal with Trump, maga and the national anthem issue.
