HELP PLEASE! I have one of these (home built in 2002): What all do I turn off? I turned the left (in the pic below) yellow valve off and used a screwdriver to drain the water from #2, 3, and 4. But I cannot seem to be able to turn the yellow on on the right off (in this pic). It's tight.
What are my Austin friends doing? In central Austin we have covered our outdoor faucets with these "faucet cover socks" and plan on disconnecting our washing machine tomorrow when the weather ticks above freezing. We're also dripping all internal faucets with a steady stream. Leaving the heat at 68 as I read on Space City Weather that every degree above that is a 3-5% increase in utility costs.
I beat the all of the ice off of every chain on every gate (and everything else) I went through today. I pissed on one combo lock, it unfroze and and I dialed the numbers in, then it worked...
i read this somewhere (possibly here?) and i hadnt thought of it.... shut off your main water line and drain all exterior faucets to get the water out of the pipes. then you can turn your main water line back on. i might just totally shut off my water at night. keep cabinet doors open under the sink so the warm air from the house can get to the pipes. if you are using towels to wrap your outside pipes make sure you put plastic bags over them so they stay dry. if you normally park under a tree consider not doing that to avoid breaking limbs/branches.
I was smart enough today to take a butane torch with me. I am so screwed...tree limbs down on fences, pipes frozen...it'll take 2 weeks after the thaw to find and fix everything.
So turn off water supply all day Monday too? 1930 had 5 degree weather. I wasn't alive like some of you. 1989 had 7 degree, but I don't recall it.
I just wrapped mine In microfiber towels and duct taped them all over. Duct tape should help keep them dry from the rain tomorrow night. My school district is expecting people to work remotely on Monday, Tuesday is also likely. Stay off the roads. Getting stuck on a freeway behind the ice truck crews sucks big time.
