In this contract season I think Correa will have a "wow" season similar to what Cole had. If he does then he's going to seek a contract similar to Cole. If it's another season that includes a major injury then that'll definitely cut into that contract.
He himself would likely want an opt out clause after 4-5 years. Given how finances normally go post CBA, would be the smart move for both sides.
Maybe not that long of a contract but he will get 30 million a year easy if Springer got 25 million. 7 years and 240 million sounds about right if he has an injury free season.
Astros know his medicals better than anybody. His injuries as of late have always been of the “fluke” variety.... and apparently the back issue had more to do with the sort of training/activities he was doing, not necessarily a structural abnormality. They also know the truth regarding the rib fracture. If they’re confident that he’s unlikely to get injured minus a “freak” incident, there should be no hesitation in discussing numbers now.
I think they are discussing numbers. However, I think him and his agent know if this Covid thing resides and he is injury free, there will be a bidding war for him. Wouldn't be surprised he gets a contract close to Bryce Harper. Maybe shorter, but more per year.
Could also work in reverse... and signing something now gives him a possible earlier payday. If he truly wants to stay here, and the overall value and value/years is competitive amongst players his age with his expected production, they should find a way to settle on numbers as they did with Altuve, Verlander, and Bregman. Contract values in baseball actually haven’t gone up with the expected increase in revenues, unlike other sports. Who knows where teams are at, financially, after this season with the new pending CBA, etc.
Before the injuries, his career was trending towards A-Rod. His playoff numbers are even better than A-rods since he's 7th all-time in post season RBI's and only 11 RBI's behind Jeter for his career. This is the same Jeter that was pretty much in the post season every year and has almost 500 more post season plate appearances. Correa is going to get PAID, so unless we offer him a record breaking contract, he would be stupid not to wait until the end of the season to see what the offers are.
I am not so sure about this. How many teams at the end of this season are going to be in a position to spend $200+ million on a shortstop? Correa Baez Lindor Story Seager There is only so much money to go around, right?
If it is true that after arbitration this year, he can be extended without the luxury tax I believe that is what the Astros are waiting for. I think he will get 7-10 year contract in the 30 mil a year range, with a player opt out after 5. This is all a guess, he is an a-rod worthy shortstop or 3rd baseman. Lots of teams will be bidding on his services. Not just teams in need of a shortstop.
Correa's market will not be as strong as some here think. Yankees- signing LeMahieu leaves Gleyber Torres as their SS and they hate Correa Red Sox- long term deal with Bogaerts Blue Jays- They have Bo Bichete Rays- Adames and they have the number one prospect in baseball in Wander Franco that is a SS Orioles- maybe? but don't see them spending big that soon in their rebuild Nationals- Trey Turner still under arbitration for this season and next Braves- Dansby Swanson still under arbitration for 2 seasons and they have to extend Freeman Marlins- Miguel Rojas and not likely to do a big contract plus they have Jazz Chisholm as a top prospect Mets- lots of talk on them working out a mega extension with Lindor Phillies- possible- but they have Segura for 2 plus an option and might be in on Semien or bring Gregorious back Cubs- If they don't resign Baez why would they spend on Correa? Cardinals- possible but they have a long term deal with DeJong Reds- possible but they might also be looking at Semien, Simmons, or Didi Brewers- could use a SS but will they take on another big contract next to Yellich? Pirates- LOL Twins-Jorge Polanco has 3 years and 2 options left and their top prospect is Royce Lewis ( #7 in MLB) a SS Indians- wouldn't extend Lindor and just traded him for 2 shortstops Royals- don't see them doing that big of a contract and their top prospect is Bobby Witt Jr. (#8 in MLB) a SS White Sox- Tim Anderson Tigers- Willi Castro raked last season but only in 36 games. COULD be a possible destination for Correa with Hinch as the coach Padres- Tatis Dodgers- Will probably extend Seager and if not, Correa is the most hated guy... no way they sign him Dbacks- have Nick Ahmed under control for 3 more seasons and shouldn't be contending anyway Giants- possible, but they would be dumb to try and compete with Padres and Dodgers in division Rockies- Would they want Correa if Story leaves? Also, should be selling not buying in that division Rangers- If Correa wants to go to the worst team in MLB... sure, maybe they do an Arod deal for him. They do have a raw rookie named Tejada they like. A's- they don't do mega contracts-need a SS this season so might not wait until next year Mariners- possible Angels- possible- do they want another mega contract for a position player? So the only teams I see as being any sort of an option are Orioles, Phillies, Cardinals, Brewers, Reds, Tigers, Giants, Rangers, Mariners, and Angels. Then maybe subtract 2 more of those teams when Semien and Gregorious sign multi year contracts.
Offer Correa 300 million over 10 years if you are confident he is healthy. Ages 26-35 Very hard to find a solid SS with a canon arm. We should be entering Correa's best years from 26-30. If Correa turns that down, he was never interested in staying.
If it costs that much I would let him walk. He isn't a 30 million a year player. He should get less than Lindor, Story, and Seager.
Lindor is a free agent in next year right? Making 22 this year. Lindor is a year older at 27. He will be looking for a long term deal next year. Correa stays healthy, he is as good as Lindor. Be interesting to see both those SS on the market next year. Edit: Seager is a free agent next year also.(Will be 28 in 22)
Would like to wrap up an extension on Correa before Lindor can set the market for what a top SS gets.
We need him very badly. He is a talented hitter but his defense is something we cant replace. Sounds like he wants to stay an astro.
Lindor is negotiating an extension with the Mets...he will probably not see the open market next offseason. IF IF IF Correa stays healthy. He entered MLB the same time as Lindor... Lindor... 2 gold gloves 3 top 10 MVP finishes and another top 15 finish, 4 time all star Same OPS as Correa 3 30 plus HR seasons Never played less than 143 games during his 4 full seasons Correa 0 gold gloves 0 top 10 MVP finishes, one top 17 finish, 1 time all star 0 30 HR seasons Same OPS as Lindor Has ONLY played more than 140 games 1 time in a season Correa might be all world talent, but he isn't on the same level as Lindor and should not be paid the same. Correa isn't a top 5 SS in MLB based on actual production and not HOPIUM. His playoff numbers do give him a boost but not in terms of getting paid like a top 3 SS in MLB.
