uhh.. what? I do that all the time

I was taught (in typing class) to double-space after every period. HTML killed that.

Some will live on, even if the technology has changed. A "carriage return" refers to a typewriter, but the term is sill used today.

Nautical Idioms that have not gone away.
    • Nautical Idiom 1: run a tight ship.
    • Nautical Idiom 2: between the devil and the deep blue sea.
    • Nautical Idiom 4: all hands on deck.
    • Nautical Idiom 5: at the helm.
    • Nautical Idiom 6: sail close to the wind.
    • Nautical Idiom 7: rock the boat.
    • Nautical Idiom 8: abandon ship
    • Nautical Idiom 9: be smooth sailing.

    There are many more:
    Three sheets to the wind
    On Board
    Go by the Board
    Take Something on Board
    Give a Wide Berth
    Batten Down the Hatches
    Down in the Doldrums.
    In Deep Water

My WAG is that these terms appeared in the English language when England ruled the seven seas.

If you bought a computer in the last five years, it probably doesn't have a "hard drive" in it or an HDD. Most people call SSDs a hard drive, but that's a misapplication. A hard drive has a rotating platter with moving parts. Now days, everything in the consumer space is solid state drives (or SSD). Phones and light tablets only use RAM, not even SSDs. PCs will probably start doing that too sometimes in the next few years. Once 5G goes mainstream, most of your storage will be in the cloud (pretty much already is anyway), but you'll likely still have a folder on your device that people will call their "hard drive".

I think this is a prime example of how idioms change. The floppy disk used to be the larger disk that was a little thinner (5 1/4). It used to flop when you waived it like a polaroid picture. I remember a professor back in the day confused our class explaining how he had to save his dissertation to a floppy when he meant the 3.5 disk, and that's when I realized how things like that change.

Call me used to mean visit me until the phone was invented.

Just thought about two idioms from Empire Strikes Back that always makes me laugh.

Han to deck officer...."Then I'll see you in Hell!"

Leia to Han..."Would it help if i get out and push"
