Im reading in the Athletic article that the 2021 pick swap works as follows - OKC get best 2 picks between all 4 of OKC/HOU/BKN/MIA (with the exception of Rockets pick being top 4 protected) In this scenario, if BKN were to have some horrific injury luck and completely bottom out and say, win the lottery, it would suggest that OKC would get that no.1 pick, and not HOU. However i have also read elsewhere that the pick swap would work as follows - OKC gets the best 2 picks between OKC/HOU/MIA (with the exception of the Rockets pick being top 4 protected). Then whichever pick the rockets end up with, likely MIA, can be swapped with BKN. In this scenario, if BKN were to have some horrific injury luck and completely bottom out and say, win the lottery, it would suggest that houston could swap their pick from the pick swap with BKN, and Houston would end up with BKN's no.1 pick. @BimaThug do you have any insight on this? Youre a genius at this complicated stuff. Sorry if its been clarified elsewhere. I really hope it is the second scenario.
So basically. Rockets need their pick to land in the top 4. Failing that, Brooklyn need to have a pick better than two of Rockets/OKC/Miami but worse than one of Rockets/OKC/Miami.
Listen to Clutch's latest podcast with bima and he explains it (Start around 15 minute mark). If I understood correctly, Houston has to fufill their obligation to the Thunder first(who owns their own and Miami's pick). They would take our pick and give us whichever is worse between the Thunder's and Miami's then we would take that pick they give us and swap it with Brooklyn (if it makes sense to).
I don't think OKC gets to take Brooklyn's pick no matter what. Only we have to right to swap with Brooklyn after we swap with OKC/Miami
Thats good news then. I saw this from tweet which shows a section of the Athletic Article (i believe by Sam Vecenie) and got confused -

So we get first dibs on those Brooklyn swaps pic.twitter.com/BBYYEFhAhf
— Clemente Almanza (@CAlmanza1007) January 14, 2021
Hopefully you are right. At the end of the day, its unlikely BKN flame out anyway. But if they did, id like to get their pick thank you and not OKC for doing absolutely nothing.
This should clarify everything: Rockets Picks: 2021: Third-best out of Oklahoma City's, Miami's, Houston's, and Brooklyn's 1st rounders (Houston's pick is top-four protected) 2022: Houston's 1st, Brooklyn's 1st, Milwaukee's 1st 2023: Best pick out of Brooklyn and Houston's 1st rounders 2024: Brooklyn's 1st, Houston's 1st if it falls in the top-four 2025: Second-best out of Oklahoma City's, Houston's, and Brooklyn's 1st rounders (Houston's pick is top-10 protected) 2026: Brooklyn's 1st, Houston's 1st if it falls in the top-four 2027: Best pick out of Brooklyn and Houston's 1st rounders Additional: Future Detroit 1st Rounder (protected 1-16 in 2021 and 2022, 1-18 in 2023 and 2024, 1-13 in 2025, 1-11 in 2026, and 1-9 in 2027) Additional: Future Portland 1st Rounder (lottery protected through 2027) Additional: Future Washington 1st Rounder starting in 2023 (protected 1-14 in 2023, 1-12 in 2024, 1-10 in 2025 and 1-8 in 2026) Sauce: https://theathletic.com/2322106/202...able-cap-draft-and-on-the-floor-implications/
See this would suggest the first scenario i posted in the original post. Which, although unlikely to matter as BKN should be fine, is terrible
Yea if you think about it, it wouldnt make sense for the Thunder to just get first dibs on everything. The thunder rockets deal was negotiated and completed involving our own pick. Because we made a subsequent trade knowing those terms, doesnt allow the Thunder to retroactively alter the terms of our completed deal. These are SWAPS not Thunder's a la carte draft pick buffet. For them to even be able to take the Brooklyn pick, we would need to swap with them first for it to come in our possession. It would make no sense for the NBA to give precedence of a pick swap out of chronological order of completed deals
I actually don't think the Athletic is right on this. The swap wouldn't be beneficial to Houston. In 2021 It would be Worst out of OKC/Miami/Houston.Then you see if that's worse or better than Brooklyn. In 2025 it would be worst out of OKC/Houston Then you see if that worse or better than Brooklyn to swap.
Some misinformation in this thread. Someone needs to sticky JR’s post with the comprehensive list of our current picks. The only thing better than that post would be one from Bima listing the protections for all picks every year
Yea, I figured the Athletic had it wrong. the Thunder Twitter is just running wild. Scenario 1 makes no sense... why help OKC get a higher pick when the Rockets could keep everyone else out.
Awesome. Thanks for clearing that up. I didnt think it made much sense for the Rockets the way the Athletic article explained it.
OKC swap only involves the initial terms of that deal. They don’t get to put their hands on everything we do.
i'm confused... so we have the right to swap WHATEVER first rd draft pick we have with the Nets? if OKC decides to invoke their right to swap - and we get the OKC pick back - we still have the right to swap that with Brooklyn? Why wouldnt we trade back whatever pick we have for the last pick - and then take our swap? ie: we have #10, Nets have #20... we trade #10 for #30 + a 2nd or whatever - and then swap #30 for the Nets #20...? (hypothetically)
