Yeah, we are tribal apes. My religions are liberalism and capitalism. I believe in the sanctity of individual rights and individualism.

It's really cool, but you can basically make a plot of primate cortical mass to average group size, and as the social groups get bigger, the "thinking" part of the brain had to expand. That keeps track of who slept with whom, who farted, and who voted for which ape.

...and not to sound too morbid...

...another thought about all this comes to mind...
...a line, actually, about the survivors of a nuclear holocaust (and this thing went nuclear, and the fallout is on its way):

''...and at the end, the living will envy the dead..."

If a person is really "caught up in the moment" and repents what they did, the legal system is allowed to consider mitigating circumstances (one may argue that it doesn't do enough of this generally, given the incarceration numbers in the U.S.). I wonder, however, if this guy is still a true believer and killed himself because he is convinced, as Trump puts it, he and his people are losing the country.

To what extent did this guy think about criminal justice reform when he didn't think criminal law would ever apply to him?

...and forgetting about a violent coup attempt against our government...;)

First thing I agree with you on.

    In related news...

Man Photographed In 'Camp Auschwitz' Sweatshirt During U.S. Capitol Riot Is Arrested

One of the most enduring images of the assault on the U.S. Capitol was that of a long-haired, bearded man wearing a black sweatshirt with a skull and crossbones graphic and the words "Camp Auschwitz" in large letters.

The FBI, in an affidavit released prior to a court appearance Wednesday, identified him as Robert Packer, 56, of Newport News, Va.

Packer was arrested at his residence, according to the affidavit, and appeared Wednesday in a virtual hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Douglas Miller in Norfolk, Va. Packer faces two criminal counts: knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

The affidavit says that Packer was first identified by "media outlets" and that the FBI matched photographs taken at the Capitol with Packer's driver's license. The affidavit includes images of Packer both outside and inside the Capitol that had appeared on social media and on a British television network.

Camp Auschwitz refers to the complex of German labor and extermination camps in occupied Poland during World War II in which more than 1 million people were murdered, most of them Jews. Packer's sweatshirt also included the words "Work Brings Freedom," an inexact translation of the German slogan that was over the camp's entrance gate, "Arbeit Macht Frei."

Norfolk NBC affiliate WAVY. He was not required to post bond but was ordered to stay away from Washington, D.C. He has a virtual court appearance scheduled for Jan. 19 in the U.S. District Court for D.C.

The acting U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Michael Sherwin, says hundreds of people are expected to be charged in connection with the assault on the Capitol.

The affidavit includes a Dec. 11 security camera photo of Packer wearing the same sweatshirt in a store near Newport News. An unidentified witness had contacted the FBI to say that Packer was a regular customer at the store. The witness did not know Packer's name.

[time to take away his guns and vote as a soon-to-be felon]

honestly, as much as I hate his shirt, that’s no extra reason for criminal charges. He can wear whatever hateful crap he wants and have a miserable under-employed, socially stunted life, but no jail time unless he did something else (including storming the capitol, yes).

Totally appropriate dialogues on the app Zello of peaceful protesters who just saw a door open and came inside:
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jan/13/zello-app-us-capitol-attack-far-right

“We are in the main dome right now,” said a female militia member, speaking on Zello, her voice competing with the cacophony of a clash with Capitol police. “We are rocking it. They’re throwing grenades, they’re frickin’ shooting people with paintballs, but we’re in here.”
“God bless and godspeed. Keep going,” said a male voice from a quiet environment.

“Jess, do your ****,” said another. “This is what we ****ing lived up for. Everything we ****ing trained for.”

“We have a good group: 30 to 40 of us. We’re sticking together and sticking to the plan,” the female voice is heard saying on Zello as they were walking toward the Capitol. “The police are doing nothing. They’re not even trying to stop us.”

As she narrated her march toward and into the Capitol, others in the Zello channel cheered on the insurrection and called for the kidnapping of politicians.

“You are executing citizen’s arrest,” said “1% Watchdog”, the creator of the channel, evoking the viral image of a man carrying zip ties in the Senate chamber. “We have probable cause: treason, acts of treason, election fraud, all kinds of felony crimes, no competent authority,” he said, referencing claims of voter fraud that have been promoted by Donald Trump and other Republican lawmakers but repeatedly debunked by journalists and the courts.
    ....
“Once we go operational, this channel will just be for intel gathering and organizing on the backside … All information, once verified, will be put into the Telegram and then shared to boots on the ground from there.”

Sounds like a terrorist organisation to me.
