...as if some of the freaking video footage of what was going on in parts of the Capitol that's coming out wasn't horrifying enough...
The dam breaks and the water will gush and the Trumpers will cry and go scurrying back to their holes - loudly, but the movement will die. DD
This is what is wrong with the current political environment. He is glad that the Democrats are going ahead with impeachment. No, He should be glad that WE are going ahead with impeachment. When a sitting president commits treason, the government body as a whole should unite to defend democracy, irrespective of which party he belongs to.
Mitch McConnell is a weasel. But a well-practiced weasel. He's been at this long enough to know when the jig is up and it's time to pick up sticks. He got what he was after in pretty short order: tax breaks for Richie Rich...a stacked conservative Supreme court...lot of other stuff, too... ...he's dealing himself out...and he might even try to get as many Republicans to join him as it's going to take to frog-march the Donald's orange posterior out the front door. He's better at this two-step than Lindsey Graham is, for example (but that's because Lindsey-dear is having a hard time being himself). Don't worry about it too much. Let the turtle cross the finish line and win this race. We do need to see if we can get a head start on getting him out of the next race, though...
Since some Republican congressmembers are coming out supporting impeachment and removal this time, I'm just wondering what's the likelihood of removal in the Senate? In 2019 there were 233 D & 195 R in the House along with a 52/48 R advantage in the Senate. Now it's 222 D and 211R and a 50/50 split. The vote breakdown in the first impeachment was 230 in favor 197 against 1 Present 3 No vote and 229 in favor 198 against 1 Present 3 No vote In the Senate 48 "guilty" 52 "not guilty" and 47 "guilty" 53 "not guilty" "The Constitution requires a two-thirds vote of the Senate to convict, and the penalty for an impeached official upon conviction is removal from office. In some cases, the Senate has also disqualified such officials from holding public offices in the future. There is no appeal. Since 1789, about half of Senate impeachment trials have resulted in conviction and removal from office." So, are the votes there this time?
Here is her full short statement. Washington - Wyoming Congresswoman and House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) released the following statement ahead of votes in the House this week: "On January 6, 2021 a violent mob attacked the United States Capitol to obstruct the process of our democracy and stop the counting of presidential electoral votes. This insurrection caused injury, death and destruction in the most sacred space in our Republic. "Much more will become clear in coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution. "I will vote to impeach the President."

Rs don't care voters. Never have; never will. Rs do care about corporate interests and it appears that corporations are heading for exists since they are not big fans of insurrections and sedition. And here is the really bad part about that. Corporations are taking their money with them. Now corporations have the Rs complete and undivided attention. The Rs need corporate donations to win elections, so the Rs will again bow in supplication to our Corporate Overloards and turn away from the SCWs who want to burn it all down.
Not sure if posted, but here is the article of impeachment. A single article - "incitement of insurrection". Short and sweet. Text - H.Res.24 - 117th Congress (2021-2022): Impeaching Donald John Trump, President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors. | Congress.gov | Library of Congress Spoiler article i: incitement of insurrection The Constitution provides that the House of Representatives ``shall have the sole Power of Impeachment'' and that the President ``shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors''. Further, section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution prohibits any person who has ``engaged in insurrection or rebellion against'' the United States from ``hold[ing] any office . . . under the United States''. In his conduct while President of the United States--and in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed--Donald John Trump engaged in high Crimes and Misdemeanors by inciting violence against the Government of the United States, in that: On January 6, 2021, pursuant to the 12th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, the House of Representatives, and the Senate met at the United States Capitol for a Joint Session of Congress to count the votes of the Electoral College. In the months preceding the Joint Session, President Trump repeatedly issued false statements asserting that the Presidential election results were the product of widespread fraud and should not be accepted by the American people or certified by State or Federal officials. Shortly before the Joint Session commenced, President Trump, addressed a crowd at the Ellipse in Washington, DC. There, he reiterated false claims that ``we won this election, and we won it by a landslide''. He also willfully made statements that, in context, encouraged--and foreseeably resulted in--lawless action at the Capitol, such as: ``if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a country anymore''. Thus incited by President Trump, members of the crowd he had addressed, in an attempt to, among other objectives, interfere with the Joint Session's solemn constitutional duty to certify the results of the 2020 Presidential election, unlawfully breached and vandalized the Capitol, injured and killed law enforcement personnel, menaced Members of Congress, the Vice President, and Congressional personnel, and engaged in other violent, deadly, destructive, and seditious acts. President Trump's conduct on January 6, 2021, followed his prior efforts to subvert and obstruct the certification of the results of the 2020 Presidential election. Those prior efforts included a phone call on January 2, 2021, during which President Trump urged the secretary of state of Georgia, Brad Raffensperger, to ``find'' enough votes to overturn the Georgia Presidential election results and threatened Secretary Raffensperger if he failed to do so. In all this, President Trump gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions of Government. He threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of Government. He thereby betrayed his trust as President, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, Donald John Trump, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law. Donald John Trump thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States.
Who knew telling an armed militia to "fight" would to lead to insurrection? I guess Trump could tell the court that he was not smart enough or competent enough to figure that one out for himself.
