It was an attempted coup. An incompetent and ill-conceived one, certainly. But there's not really any other word for it.
Yep. A shitty, ineffective coup is still a coup. Imagine BLM doing this. Or the Bernie left. There would be bodies in the streets and they would all be banished from adult society for a generation.
Isn't it, at the very least, debatable whether they were attempting to seize government power or disrupt a congressional session to formally accept the election result as a political statement? It's possible that some of these people are actual insurrectionists, but I think predominantly the people in the mob that breached the Capitol building were just overzealous protesters who wanted to make a lot of noise to express their displeasure with what they (wrongly) consider to be a tainted electoral process. Now, maybe for the sake of preventing anything like this from repeating in the future we are better off painting the whole group with the same brush and declaring them to be terrorists and seditionists. My worry is that this is not a way to actually reach these people and convince them of why they are wrong.
you are right...i am assuming the 14th amendment isn't enforced against anybody even though it should and that cruz eventually gets re-elected. but yes he should absolutely be expelled so that he isn't even eligible for re-election.
They crossed the line at some point (the moment they broke through the barricades). You and I both know there is a fine line and being ignorant does not excuse you from being complicit. You know, they could of simply gotten inside the Capitol and sang some songs while the Senators/House Members were doing their thing. Maybe, at this point they get the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't an attempted coup. However, they had clear intent on what their actions were and that's to stop the democratic process of counting votes. What happens if those electoral votes would have been left on the floor? What if they would of gotten a hold of them and burned them? As pointed out by @FranchiseBlade they temporarily succeeded in delaying the vote. Disrupting a congressional session was their clear intent. That's what Trump directed them to do. He gave them a speech and they ****ing went and executed. I bet you the ones who just wanted to protest had an out of body experience once they got in the Capitol and suddenly realized they had some power in their hands and got more riled up. What happened in BLM protests? Whenever some individuals would get violent and wreckless, you always had other protestors attempting to stop them. We saw no evidence of that happening yesterday.
No, it's not. Their purpose was to prevent the US Government from conducting a key step - listed in the Constitution - for transferring power to the next President. They were literally trying to prevent the winner of the election from taking power. That is basically, by definition, an attempted coup. They brought a f***ing noose to the grounds of the Capitol to hang Congresspeople and Senators who they called traitors. They placed pipebombs in both the Capitol and at the DNC and RNC.
What they did is what they did. For the record there were thousands of Pro Trump people there and only a few hundred engaged in the breach. I agree on trying to reach the larger crowd. But these people mentioned that it was 1776 and proclaimed Trump was the elected president. It was a coup for them.
I do not think it is a coup because Trump is still in office for the next 2 weeks. (A coup is also usually made by people with clout, political power.) There should be a coup against him right about now. In form of an impeachment or whatever. This is an embarrassment for what this country stands for. The masses become zombies when they stop processing real thoughts.
This is just a strange thing to argue. In history many revolutions started with a small group taking over a key gov't building. Latin America, Iran, Egypt, even Russia can be counted. In theory if they could occupy the capitol and were armed creating a standoff in which Trump refused to use force to excise them, it would prevent congress from being able to have a session. Yet here you arguing, "oh well, calling that a coup attempt seems a bit hyperbole"
My view of what happened is admittedly incomplete, based on the coverage from yesterday. The impression I got was that it was a temporary disruption and they didn't have any intention of occupying the building indefinitely or overthrowing the government. How long were they there, and what ultimately caused them to leave?
only reason they were cleared out is because reinforcements came and the National Guard was finally deployed they were also actively looking for officials when sieging the building it’s like u don’t even know what was actually happening yesterday...
delay it for the sake of delaying it? or delay it for the sake of overturning it? “You’ve got pissed-off patriots that are not going to accept their form of government being stolen,” “We’re walking down the same exact path as the Founding Fathers,” 'telling them (the cops) they should stand down and refuse to follow orders of the illegitimate legislators.” Chris Hill, a Marine veteran who leads the 75-member Georgia-based III% Security Force called the attack on the Capitol a “shot heard round the world.” “The second revolution begins today,” Hill said. “A start to a new beginning brothers! Let’s set the scales straight and if war sets afoot we will rebel!” Zachary Wallace wrote Wednesday in an online forum for members of the Three Percenters group. “The time for voting and getting a little piece of the pie for our own labors is OVER. The time for action and a reset is NOW. ARE YOU AWAKE YET?” wrote a user identified as “Rodger OH” in the same forum, signing off in Latin “God’s Will,” a rallying cry from the Crusades. “When do we take our country back?” asked Ian Gunning. “I hope this isn’t just a one time thing. The country needs to be reset and politicians need to be reprimanded. We run the country not them.” Others were disappointed that those who stormed the Capitol appeared to be unarmed and didn’t seize the building. “You took and held the high ground just to walk away without even drawing your sword,” Nino Brunori wrote. He dismissed the presidential election as “a sham” and said Congress shouldn’t certify the results. “We’re having an election stolen from us, we no longer have effective representation, we have pretend legislators,” Rhodes said. “We’ll see what President Trump does.”
Thanks for the info. As I said, I didn't have complete picture of what happened. Was there a fight inside the Capitol building once the National Guard arrived? Did any of them use weapons or threaten to use weapons to resist being thrown out? There must have been some resistance, since a woman was shot and killed.
@durvasa would trust these revolutionists to get hold of Pence and simply high five him and let him be
I don't think this is the case. I mean, is that really his MO? I don't pay enough attention to names to have an informed opinion, but his opinion here is fair... probably wrong, but fair to have. Also, I'm stuck in a Falling Down YouTube clip spiral, lol. The Proud Boys are like the Nazi shop owner who was helping out Michael Douglas. Michael was saying to him, "I'm nothing like you." Great movie. Douglas' character had redeeming qualities, but life's misfortune took him from being a responsible working man to vigilante to fully transforming into the villain, and he didn't realize that he was the bad guy until the end. Those are many Trumpers to me...a bunch of Michael Douglasses who still think they're the good guys. How do you open their eyes? Are they too far gone from saving? It's tough to know.
So why are you saying what something is or is not when you don't know all of the info? There is plenty of info in the Jan 6th thread stating there intentions if you really want to know. What does it matter how long they were there or what caused them to leave?
I did say "seems" and "to me". I'm always open to the possibility that I'm wrong. That seems to me to be a pretty crucial detail if we want to build a case that they engaged in an attempted coup.
