And I’m not just talking about head coach positions. You can go down the coordinator list in the league and find multiple former head coaches.
Lewis had more than one head coaching job? Sure he lasted longer than he should have, but that’s not really a retread. you also conveniently leave out the retread successes and the new hire failures. In the end, most teams nowadays do not hire retreads... and the ones that have may end up striking success as a result (Andy Reid being the most prominent).
Why do you think that is? You now advocate that any former nfl coach should never work in football again?
I’m not talking strictly about head coaches. This is a weird discussion. We can go through every head coach and coordinator if you want, I’ve got a pretty extensive knowledge of it. Bottom line is the candidates being thrown around for the Texans are typical ho hum guys that didn’t have success and we know who they are. If retread is what you’re hung up on, use any other synonym. Tired, mediocre, average, run of the mill.
Sorry, still cracking up at your “extensive knowledge” when you didn’t even realize that most current nfl head coaches had never been a head coach before. I want them to select the best candidate available. I don’t want them to exclude arbitrarily if somebody happened to be a head coach prior. That’s how you miss out on coaches like Reid, Carroll or Belichick that may have learned something from their first failure. I also don’t think they should shy away from college options simply because of BOB. Sometimes the best coordinator available is Sean Payton... sometimes it’s Adam Gase (twice). There’s not an infinite number of candidates who have the dedication, desire and stamina to be a consistent engaged/great NFL head coach.
Where are you getting that I didn’t realize most coaches weren’t already head coaches at? I said there are always retreads in the league, it’s always been that way. You’re literally making things up. I’ve been pretty civil towards you because you decided to harp on the word retread for some reason. But don’t put words in my mouth. I’m fine with searching for the best candidate. You look pretty damn silly comparing Belichick and Reid to Caldwell and Lovie. Just stop. Both of them have shown on multiple occasions that they are who they are. Not to mention they are running semi dated concepts. Reid has multiple years of success in Philly and a strong track record. Belichick had a short stint as a head coach after an amazing job at coordinator. Caldwell and Lovie have had multiple head coaching jobs and have done nothing. What other candidates that are former head coaches are you interested in?
Add to that, I read your post a lot. You always come across as informed and intelligent. Not sure where this animosity is coming from. If you want to go back and forth on knowledge, fine with me.
Animosity? You said there's a tendency for teams in the NFL to "hire the same guys". I've merely refuted that fallacy. In fact, given the amount of failed "new innovative" head coaches that were previously phenomenal coordinators, I don't think its a slam dunk either way. They should consider all options and not eliminate anybody. Also, not sure why you keep bringing up Lovie Smith? The Texans aren't interviewing him for HC this time around... but I'd take him to run this defense (if he was still coaching). And if you're just tossing out his SB appearance as "doing nothing", so be it... (and I'm by no means a Lovie Smith fan, just saying him and Caldwell have actually not embarrassed themselves vs. other new hot/hip coaches).
And this is where you’re getting hung up, I’m not talking about head coach only. It isn’t a fallacy at all, you can look at any staff and a ton of the top 3 positions (Head coach and both coordinators) are re-hires. Right now there is a run on “new blood” so to speak but once they get fired there will then be a retread tendency. The league has always been like that, they in fact put in rules to get more names in the hat. I brought up Lovie and Caldwell because they were brought up in this chat. The Tampa 2 and inverted Tampa 2 is dated, and we don’t have the personnel to run it except maybe Cunningham and Watt. But that’s just my opinion. I prefer more attacking and man coverage.
The rules are to promote diversity... is that a problem? Wade Phillips could still have a new job as a DC next year... why? because his teams typically perform/improve in their first season, but I'm guessing you wouldn't support him getting another gig as well? There will always be old coordinators getting consideration for HC jobs or continuing with coordinating. There are new coordinators that come up every year, especially when the area they coach excels. Yes, this is "how its always been"... and I don't think that's all that surprising. There are always new head coach hires, whether its via coordinator or via college. That being said, when the majority of those fail, teams shouldn't be necessarily criticized for considering established names with experience.
It’s not just about diversity, but no I don’t have a problem with it. I would personally rather go with the unknown than the known mediocrity. There are a few established names I would consider, maybe. But Caldwell isn’t one of them.
WTF?!? Everyone currently in the building should be gone. You could argue that Carl Smith has done a good job developing Deshaun but he's 72.
Don't expect anyone within the FO to be hired, expect very few to be retained. Texans are approaching this with a broad range(as they should). Seems like the Caldwell interview was the 1st of 2 required minority interviews. EB will be the other but that will for sure be a sales pitch to him.
Bazirgan picked this for his linkedin photo. If you don't like him as a GM candidate, I'm guessing he will FIGHT YOU RIGHT NOW!
I'm sold! Then there is this: Not sure if Texans at Daily is a reliable source but it's not difficult to see easterby pulling strings to get guys in here that will keep him around. The things is I like Daboll more than the Carolina guy. I want nothing to do with easterby. throw some sulfur on him and let him be gone.
