What's the alternative. Not sign him and go to not making the playoffs?

With the pandemic, bunch of players should try to secure that bag. As a Rockets fan, low key happy to see the Jazz getting stuck with that big ol' contract. Endowment effect in full effect.

Maybe they'd get lucky and draft a John Stockton at #16.

Honestly, maybe yeah. You're never gonna win with 40% of your cap on a one way big man. Recently the champions have won with minimum ish type centers. Maybe trade him for a wing and try to change the team composition. I don't know the Jazz goals though some franchise's are legitimately happy just being in the mix so it might be that.

Recent champions who have won also have paired Steph, Klay, and Draymond, those three guys and Kevin Durant, Lebron James and Kyrie Irving, Lebron James and Anthony Davis, and Kawhi Leonard with Lowry and Siakam in a flukey year where Kevin Durant got hurt in the playoffs.

Trading Rudy in the last year of his deal so the team who gets him can pay $205mm for him isn't getting you Kevin Durant back.

The Jazz really had no choice but to resign Gobert for this. At least they avoided the supermax.

I think it's ok really. The Jazz won't win a championship over the course of this contract but they probably aren't gonna win for a very very long time anyway. Only one team can win and if the goal is to be in the top 5 then it's fine. If you want to win a championship then that's way too much cap for a one way big. If the Jazz had their core set this contract would be ok but now it's Mitchell, Gobert and no real way to add the 3rd star.

That's effectively my rationale. I agree there's no reasonably likely way for the Jazz to be even a credible second tier contender with this core and Rudy at this number unless they somehow luck into a foundational player on a rookie deal or Mitchell jumps to best player in the league status. But they don't have any real choice. Rudy unquestionably helps them win games and keeps them as a playoff caliber team. They aren't going to be able to do anything better if they let him walk and he almost certainly gets this deal from someone else in FA. Going full Process wouldn't make any sense for them right now.

Unless he gets hurt or seriously declines this deal can probably be moved as well, maybe even for positive value or maybe won't take much in terms of sweeteners.

I don’t believe he was eligible for a supermax

If Jazz would have paid him a bit more, they could have gotten more out of Gobert.

Gobert’s Contract is the Worst in the NBA & perhaps in league history. The Jazz are overpaying by $25 million a year. You never give max money to a guy that can’t score and can’t exploit a mismatch. Especially one that can be exploited as a mismatch. The Jazz really effed up bad!

And Quinn Snyder should be fired yesterday. He should have benched Gobert when they cut that 25 point lead to 15.

Its definitely an overpay, but it seems like its worked out better than most here thought. Most of the post talks about how the Jazz wouldn't accomplish anything or are at best second rate contenders with their roster.

While the Jazz definitely aren't going to win the title and are already eliminated, they did accomplish a ton this year. Winning that many games and getting the number 1 seed were two things I didn't think they were capable of with their roster. They wont get to or win the FINALS until they acquire a top 10 player but players like KD, Curry, Lebron, Kawhi, etc don't usually end up in Utah via trade or free agency.

Overpaid by at least 85 million, he's not and will never be a #1 or #2 on a championship team. I don't care if they are a small market, you have to reserve supermaxes for GO TO guys who can win championships or you will be doomed,
