The original Landry's way out westside was a great restaurant, the 2nd place, Willie G's Seafood on Post Oak at the Loop was even better, and he royally, and I mean royally ****ed the original owners out of them. Those were the first people who learned the hard way not to partner with Tilman Fertitta. Thus began his chain restaurant empire. He bought up other places for the name (Saltgrass, a Houston chain, Rainforest, from Minny, etc) and he expanded like The Blob, consuming all in his path. Houston has amazing food, but Houston does love its local chain restaurants: Ninfa's, Pappa's, Landry's, Goode's, [eta] Mandola/Carrabba's, etc...

Hmmm, hadn't heard about this yet. If there's one thing the Kleberg's like as much as Tilman, it's making money. I actually have a solid friend/contact down at the Ranch, how it came about is a great story, but I'll have to ask him about this. As far as I know this is the first outside use of their name/brand, [eta: I'm wrong, just remembered they licensed out their name to Ford for the "King Ranch Package" of top shelf fancy trucks] they are a notoriously private family.
Yep, Taqueria was solid, especially for breakfast, but I really liked his Seafood joint when I lived in that neighborhood. In fact, the campechana and a bowl of gumbo would be one of the first things I'd want to eat next time I'm in Houston (assuming it's still there and hasn't changed)
My go to "All You Can Eat" was 'Golden Corral' from back in the day. Didn't really have problems with this chain until going to one at Orlando just outside theme park attractions. I smelled moldy plates as soon as I walked into the joint but my family wanted to dine. My gut started to churn and throb and discharged it's contents at Taco Bell restroom down the road. Lets just say everything didn't make it in the toilet. Even from the car I could hear the cleanup employee's dismay.
I don't think Landry's sucks. Although I haven't been to one in years, and some of his other restaurants I like as well, but it's fashionable to hate on Fertita so I get it.
nope. landry's is dope. people who don't like it are probably impure, non 99ers. eat at landry's and keep harden.
Probably joking, but honestly I don't understand the "hate on Tilman's businesses" schtick. There are enough things to hate on without bringing that to the equation...
You haven't been to one in years, and you don't think it sucks... My standards are quite low. I've never been to a Landry's twice because I never ever crave their food.
I don't eat out all that often. I haven't specifically been to a Landry's in years, but I've eaten at other Landry's owned restaurants like The Oceanaire, Babins, McCormick and Schmicks. I like all of those. Like I said there is enough valid things to hate on Tilman about already. This just feels petty and useless.
Thanks @Os Trigonum - I am also a lazy MF! If someone wants to create that thread and take credit I am totally fine with that. Otherwise we all gonna have tons of names for good ole Tildo, and again, my apologies to you!
