Texas GOP chair floats secession for 'law-abiding states' after Supreme Court defeat | TheHill

“The Supreme Court, in tossing the Texas lawsuit that was joined by seventeen states and 106 U.S. congressman, has decreed that a state can take unconstitutional actions and violate its own election law resulting in damaging effects on other states that abide by the law, while the guilty state suffers no consequences," West said after the ruling. "This decision establishes a precedent that says states can violate the U.S. constitution and not be held accountable.

“This decision will have far-reaching ramifications for the future of our constitutional republic," he continued. "Perhaps law-abiding states should bond together and form a Union of states that will abide by the constitution.”

I wonder if he realizes that Texas was one of those states that took "unconstitutional actions and violated its own election law" with the Governor adding early voting days by executive order. The Texas GOP even sued the state for it.

    Exactly..

Under the rational put forward by AG Paxton if this suit had succeeded then CA could've sued TX on the same basis.

This suit was never going to succeed and I'm pretty sure Paxton knew that. This is more irresponsible behavior on the part of the many. It would be pathetic if it didn't have such far reaching implications.

So in the 1860s, white conservatives wanted to secede in the interest of maintaing slavery for themselves.

Here in 2020, white conservatives want to secede in the interest of maintaining slavery to Trump.

    Awesome.

What does it really mean when a "strict" constitutionalist uses the words "law abiding"?

What is the ACTUAL goal behind all of these gimmicks? Does someone owe Trump a favor? "Fundraising"? Is the GOP trying to grow the cult? Does someone want a gig on Trump's network? What gives? Seriously?

Its fundraising for Trump personally who needs the cash flow and also control of the right wing propaganda sphere moving forward.

Trump is threatening to take down FoxNews. That’s about all this is about in the end. It’s all about money and the power that money buys. Control of Fox and the media networks that control their cult followers is where this starts and where it ends.

What is the casualty of this Succession HBO show family feud??.... well the Republican Party has had to brand itself officially as an anti Democratic fascist dictatorship. I’m sure that won’t have lasting impacts or anything.

You never go wrong playing to Texas hubris. If Americans are exceptional, we are super exceptional.

I remember as a kid saying " Texas is bigger than Alaska, once the ice melts".

For Ken Paxton, he's hoping for a pardon from his securities fraud investigation. For everyone else, it's become clear that you get popular with the GOP base by out-crazy-ing everyone else, so it's just a matter of what ridiculous things people can come up with.

That didn’t matter. When you have already loss the election, TX would welcome CA suing them to invalidate the election.

If the court took the case and actually have hearings on it, would it have risked some deadline and throw us into a crisis? If so, that might have been the Hail Mary they were going after.

The irony of Texans saying we need to secede because a life long New Yorker Yankees' fan lost the Presidency..

Except that might not be just for this election. That might be for future elections.

Maybe that was the Hail Mary they were looking for but more sign that they are willing to burn it down to get their way.

It would be an interesting political exercise seeing as how the Texas Capital is in a liberal city and surrounded by 50,000 educated youths

If they succeeded in overturning election result, what future elections? Pretty much a moot point afterward.

One thing we have witness is the win at all cost. This isn’t exactly a new philosophy. It’s a return to the brutal ways of the past where there isn’t any shame or honor or values or integrity or laws.
