I am genuinely curious. If you dont think Simmons is a freak athlete. How many freak athletes are there in the nba? He has functional dunk over everything athleticism in the nba. There are only a handful of players who can do what he does in a fast break situation. He is a tier below Giannis and Zion but i struggle to think of anyone else more impressive than him.
I agree, there are other ways to test explosiveness. But vertical is vertical. There’s also ways to gain a few inches in jump training but you can either jump or not. In reality most NBA athletes are going to be 33-36 inch vertical. Anything over that is really good (33-36 is really good for people in general) The agility tests can give you a semblance of explosion, same with sprints (although I wish they would break it down into quarters for speeds) I test and coach in different sports but the testing aspect is similar.
Tatum would be a Salary match with no draft picks. Boston isn't giving Tatum AND PICKS. Plus Tatum's poison pill contract will make the deal very difficult. I don't see it.
Part of that ability is height. He’s not Lebron, Zion, Giannis level imo. And really there are a ton of dudes that can jump higher than him and get off the ground quicker than him. To me he is more smooth than he is explosive. Just my opinion
When I think explosive I think Bo Jackson, Mike Trout, Dominique types. That look like they’re going to break the ground they jump off of.
Simmons 2020-21: $30,559,200 2021-22: $33,003,936 2022-23: $35,448,672 2023-24: $37,893,408 2024-25: $40,338,144 That is a **** ton of money. When does Tilman consider it the worst contract he’s ever seen (in business or in sports, surpassing Chris Paul’s)? Spoiler Matisse Thybulle 2020-21: $2,711,280 2021-22: $2,840,160 (Team Option) 2022-23: $4,379,527 (Team Option) 2023-24: $6,275,862 (Qualifying Offer) Caris LeVert 2020-21: $16,203,704 2021-22: $17,500,000 2022-23: $18,796,296 Taurean Prince 2020-21: $12,584,375 2021-22: $13,334,375 Spencer Dinwiddie 2020-21: $11,454,048 2021-22: $12,302,496 (Player Option) Jarrett Allen 2020-21: $3,909,902 2021-22: $5,661,538 (Qualifying Offer) Andre Iguodala 2020-21: $15,000,000 2021-22: $15,000,000 (Team Option) Kelly Olynyk 2020-21: $13,198,243 Tyler Herro 2020-21: $3,822,240 2021-22: $4,004,280 (Team Option) 2022-23: $5,722,116 (Team Option) 2023-24: $7,913,686 (Qualifying Offer) Duncan Robinson/Kendrick Nunn 2020-21: $1,663,861 2021-22: $2,122,822 (Qualifying Offer)
Sure but height and length are a big part of that athleticism equation. Zion is Zion because of his size. Those physics defying hops are only eye popping because it comes from a 280 pound frame. There are many players in the NBA who can jump higher than Giannis and get off the ground quicker than him. But what makes him completely unique is his ridiculous length.
I dont disagree. Like i said there are functional athleticism(Amare, Westbrook, Shawn Kemp, Zion) people who explodes to the rim regardless of opposition. And non-functional athleticism(Chase Budinger, Gerald Green, Brent Barry etc) people can only jump if its an open court. Simmons has functional athleticism.
I absolutely agree. He’s fluid. What sets him apart more than the athleticism is his skill set imo. The not being able to shoot is a big red flag though. I still think Herro is going to be good. I get tired of the “not athletic” stuff just because the kid is white. Testing was solid but more importantly he looks athletic on the court.
To each his/her own. Like most Rockets fans, I loathe the Brooklyn package. "A bunch of jellybeans” as Shannon Sharpe would say.
So your willing to build a franchise around a guy who doesn't have the confidence to shoot the basketball?
It baffles me after watching a whole season of Westbrook shoot brick after brick , that some of you would even entertain Simmons doing it here. Stupidity like none other
Agreed on at least getting Maxey in the deal, too. Because in the scenario mentioned, you're dealing Harden AND Tucker, and Tucker should be worth a mid- to late 1st rounder by himself, even as an expiring contract. So in this scenario, they're basically saying Harden is worth only Simmons and a first, which feels crazy low to me. Personally, if Tucker is involved, I think they should get Thybulle, Maxey and AT LEAST two unprotected firsts, if not another asset, like Milton, a lottery protected first, a pick swap or some 2nds.
