People are acting like he was running the church and making decisions to open. He was an associate pastor - he wasn't in charge of anything and likely had zero influence on whether the church opened or closed.

Typically the pastor of a church is in charge of such things, at least the churches I'm familiar with, so it's a reasonable assumption to make.

If it's God's will that you get Covid and die doesn't apply when you do something knowingly harmful. Anyone with a brain could have figured out Covid was deadly after seeing thousands dying of the virus in Italy & Spain before we had a problem here. God gave humans brains to use for a reason.

The head pastor is generally in charge (or Senior Pastor, in the case of this church). This guy is not that - he's some lower level random pastor. Megachurches also typically run differently - they have 100+ employees and many, many pastors for different purposes.

Beyond that, the guy apparently didn't even contract it relating to church, nor did he have it at church. It seems he got it while on vacation and never was at the church after contracting it.

Fair. Looks like the story was a bit engineered to garner a reaction. Typical.

    ...exactly.

...had an old Negro Baptist preacher tell me once:

"...boy, God gave man enough sense to do what he need to do to get on in this life...an' it ain't none 'o God's fault if you don't use what he give you...
...God told Noah he was gonna flood the whole world, but Noah ain't wait 'til it started rainin' to build the ark..."

...problem is (and always has been, to me)...
...that common sense might not really be all that common...;)

He had control over his own body and his own mouth. He has control over whether to participate in the super spreader event and voice support or opposition to it.

Being the associate kool-aid mixer in Jonestown doesn’t mean you are not culpable.

So the church is more like a corporation. Got it.

Sure - I guess this is true for any employee of any organization. Anyone who doesn't quit is culpable for anything their organization does. Worked for the State Department as an accountant in 2004? You're responsible for the Iraq War since you didn't quit in protest.

From an organizational standpoint, megachurches certainly are (for the most part). They are basically profit-seeking enterprises disguised as religion.

Pretty sure that he didn’t just stay in the organization but also continued participating in endangering himself and others.

All churches should be taxed, period.....give them up to $300k ish of untaxed monies but anything beyond that is recognized as profit and must be subject to tax as all businesses are.

Churches are in the BUSINESS of selling their ideals - they should be taxed like every other business.
