I've only been to two games. One was an actual roof open decision, San Diego 2010. I say decision because 2008 they were forced to leave roof open after Hurricane Ike Why do they never open the roof? There are plenty of Fall days like today in Houston and why today?
Why they don't, perhaps they want the crowd noise and with the lack of fans it's moot? They had it open their last home game as well.
The field is almost entirely in shade now (halfway through the third quarter). They should push for more 3pm starts if the roof staying open is going to start being a thing.
Not really an issue for players on the field. Occasionally impacts tv, but for less than half the game. There also hasn’t been a cloud in the sky for either of these two games. They can and should open it when it’s partly sunny or even overcast, presuming no rain.
Roof open in Arizona also, another place they never open it. You're probably spot in with your reasoning.
BOB didn’t like the roof open hence as soon as he leaves, roofs open. Actually got that form Lance Zierlien
Kubiak didn’t like it open much either... even though there’s no measurable difference in quality of play or fan noise either way.
Oddly, I’ve only been to one game and it was vs the Colts when Kubiak had the issue. Sunday night game, roof was open.
It was supposed to be a temp/humidity deal...but the Texans ignored that for years. Now that it doesn't matter, crowd-wise, it's all happening.
The open air game I went to back in the day was awesome. There's something off about the presentation at NRG, the screen takes away from the field, the PA is oppressively loud and we always had to bring in jackets until about this time because our seats were under the a/c vents. Like at some point I just want to watch the game, you know? And the reason they wouldn't open the roof, something I have a specific and fond memory of them doing once upon a time, is because I wouldn't be as loud? Idk, I spent my time watching the 300 ft flashing light screen, sitting down because I was cold and yelling at the people next to me just to be heard. Also the team sucked ha. But ok roof!
Crowd noise may be part of it, but the way the stadium is built, its very likely the crowd noise is similar with it open vs. it closed. Maybe the 'other' ambient noise (Pa announcer, video promos) are amplified with the roof closed, but that's not the noise they're claiming. TBH, Houston hasn't been passionate about the Texans since around 2012... there was a time where it was deafening in there on many defensive possessions, but that really hasn't been the case for the majority of the last 8 years despite still having sell-outs. In the end, some of the coaches just want all variables to be controlled. When there are no clouds, a quarter of the field is in direct sun at the start of noon games, and there is the potential for issues on kickoffs, punts, or deep passes... even though most football players should be well accustomed to playing outdoors on sunny days. Still doesn't explain why it was closed for perfect night games over the years. I also suspect the vocal season ticket holders who sit on that side of the field, in direct sun, aren't all that comfortable... and the sun stays in the stands till around 1:30-2pm. On that note, pretty sure most Houstonians are not used to sitting in sun-drenched stands unlike other cities... a somewhat weak reason, but the more probable reason.
