Exactly. I'm sure everyone here has paid extra for a version of something that provides no additional utility purpose. Softer bed sheets, a higher class emblem on the breast of your polo, a cut of beef that costs $50 but provides roughly the same nutrients as the $15 cut, or even a fine wine.

We all waste money on crap because surviving isn't all that difficult in our society. For many people, we're mainly looking for something that influences our own emotions to make us happy. Clothing is the easiest way to control our personal aesthetics, and in turn influence others judgement of you. The immediate appraisal people make when they focus their awareness on you. Made before you can even react to their noticing you. Color psychology is fairly powerful in itself, and that's only one facet of the message attire sends before words are considered.

While I've never spent more than $30 for a tee-shirt, I have spent thousands on TVs, PC components, gaming consoles, etc. I bought a $20 bottle of beer just last week.

    To each his own.

Often, but we can only judge on a case by case basis. In this example, considering he's working with a french fashion company - it's hard to say they are targeting lower socio-economic groups when fashion companies sell $120 t-shirts all the time, and that's actually cheap by some standards (http://www.refinery29.com/2013/07/50240/kanye-apc-t-shirt#slide-1)

And women spend $1000 on things like a summer dress - there's nothing amazing here either.

If someone wants to spend $120 on a white t-shirt, heck, that's their prerogative. If that's what brings them happiness and joy in life, I don't think it's anyone's place to say they shouldn't. If they should be putting that money into a college fund for their kids - well, I doubt they would do that anyway if they didn't buy that shirt.

Everyone has their priorities. I don't think West or the fashion industry is at fault here. One might argue they are capitalising on some of our less noble traits, but nevertheless, I think the buyer is fully aware of the decisions they are making.

I think it's far far worse when it comes to the foods we eat and what's in them that we really aren't told. For instance I use protein powder and make a lot of shakes. But I am very careful of which ones I use. The ones made in China - while cheaper, tend to contain heavy metals. Yuck! But you wouldn't know that unless someone had done testing on it. The FDA doesn't do it either. So really, to me, there's big battles to fight than potentially over-priced t-shirts.

I never said that the government should step in and stop the t shirt trade. Food contents should be regulated by the government.

Where I have a problem is where celebrities lend their name to sell a t shirt for $120. I'm sure that this was targeted to the caviar and country club crowd considering they buy so many tickets to Kanye West concerts.

I doubt Kanye West is merely popular with poor people firstly. Secondly, if the poor are buy expensive designer clothes I wonder where they are getting the credit cards to make online purchases to sell out a french online retailer. Usually the poor don't qualify for credit. Finally, if it is indeed the poor buying $120 shirts - who cares. some people like to look good as that's their only source of pride. No one wants to look poor even if they are. I don't think it's for us to sit high above and tell poorer people they should only buy basic food and live spartan lives because of reason x,y, and Z.

I never said only poor people. I said that the wealthy generally aren't big Kanye fans. There are many points on the economic scale between wealthy and poor.

Assuming it is poor people buying them, what are they not paying in order to buy them? As a bankruptcy attorney, I have seen some of these stories.

Somehow I seriously doubt the people rushing visiting a french fashion company's website, in french no less, and using their cc's to buy $120 t-shirts shipped internationally are poor.

Me too. I said so in my previous post. The majority of middle income America lives paycheck to paycheck and such expenditures are generally not in their budget. However they make them anyway.

So are you saying that by the same standard, it's wrong for basketball and baseball teams to market to middle america and expect them to chug out $400 to take their family to a 2.5 hour game when they could just stay home and watch it on TV?

I mean, where do you draw the line on what people should buy and not? That white t-shirt might last longer than 2.5 hours....

For 120 bucks, it better give me a blowjob and some nachos at the very least.

I think we can all agree that people who bought this shirt are idiotic, status-obsessed, gullible, consumerist tools. Regardless of whether they're filthy rich or dirt poor. I don't really see what else there is to argue about here.

Stars can sell their dandruff and someone would buy it. Crazy world. Selling autographs is the most useless of them all.

That shirt might be some quality soft luxury cotton. Who knows. After all, people buy ripped up jeans or shirts for twice the price.

Different tweeds for different breeds makes the world more interesting I guess.

That’s a star from houston who’s promoting McDonald’s and it’s been very successful for basically a quarter pounder with cheese and some bbq sauce

promoting plain t shirts vs. promoting a modified McDonald’s meal

Yeah, I know who he is. Just not my kind of music, and the only thing I like at McDonalds is their fries.
