Best CFS I've had was at Clear Springs. For about $10-12 you get large enough portion to take half of it home and heat and eat later. Lots of carbs, outstanding cream gravy, tasty mashed potatoes so don't eat often. Tender enough to cut with a fork. I don't know if they have any Clear Springs restaurants in the Houston area but they are all over central Texas and other parts of Texas.

lol. The only reason I know about Sodolak's is because of them "inventing" chicken fried bacon. Also on my bucket list. They also have huge steaks from what I recall.

Nice story. I'll be honest with you : I didn't think Mary's was as great as people made it out to be. It was good, but not legendary or anything. You should get the large just to have whoever you're with bust out laughing. Then take the leftovers home to feed yourself the rest of the week. LOL. I remember taking a pic of it to send to a friend but couldn't figure out how to convey the scale of it. I put a fork on top of it and sent the pic. One of my friends texted me back with something like "what in the hell?"

Been there and had the chicken fried bacon. Your arteries start to pulse eating it...

From Lulu's Cafe in San Antonio back in 2016. Gravy problem solved. Cream on top, brown on bottom. BTW the CFS was just OK, not great by any means.

Ouisie's Table. But it's a joint for old people in River Oaks so I never go (because of the olds and the vibe). Mia's Table if you grew up with the OG Luby's chicken fried steak and have a family with kids to lug around.

In Magnolia Eden's Cafe on 1488 has a pretty decent CFS. Edens is pretty good for breakfast too... interesting mix of southern and Cuban things on the menu. I think Eden's is the last restaurant we've actually sat in and had a meal (brunch)...

This is one of those crazy questions with no real solid answer.

The only proper answer is in someone's kitchen. 95% of restaurant CFS is horrible, good ones are incredibly few and far between. I've given up on trying.

To other points: should be served with peppery cream gravy on the side, mashed potatoes, and greens (collard, mustard stewed with pork and butter and spices), or okra, and good bread/biscuits.

Brown gravy is for grill/roast meat, it has no business anywhere around a CFS, and I've never seen a place in Texas serve it.

My grandmother and now my Mom make the best I've ever had. No matter how many times I do exactly what they do, it just doesn't turn out the same, so every couple of months I'll go over to mom's for CFS night.

Step 1: go shoot a deer
    Step 2: butcher deer
Step 3: let mom cook it

    Pretty simple recipe, really.

    Deer?

I have never had that for a CFS.

Not sure if I would like that.

You can fry anything. Didn't you watch King of the Hill? Chicken fried venison sounds different. I need to try that one day. lol.

So I mentioned Mia's Table earlier. They have this awesome jalapeno white gravy. It also is full of black pepper. But not really SPICY believe it or not. And I think okra is the #1 side for me with CFS.

‘it’s actually the best way to have venison. Chicken fried back strap or chicken fried tenderloin. My father in law actually makes venison pan sausage, then breads and fries it. It’s like a South Texas venison schnitzel
