After looking at the Kolache thread and people mentioning Snook, I thought about the best CFS I have ever had, just the right juiciness and breading with great gravy.

Would like to hear of the best places to buy, especially out of Texas and also good recipes since I like to cook them myself.

Not a great gravy cooker so any tips about that would be great.

Also are there any ok frozen options, I got some from Walmart that was ok in pinch surprisingly, I think it was southern something.

I also remember Dairy queen had some great steak fingers back in the day.

Steak fingers and a vanilla coke or was that cherry coke?

    I can't remember.

Threadgills in Austin had terrific Chicken Fried Steak. Close runner up was the County Line. Haven't tried any frozen variants thou did take a look at a package at Costco for a minute before passing. There are some mom and pop places in the area that if I am in the mood I will order one. It always seems hit or miss thou.

Not sure what happened to the steak fingers at DQ, I wont even go to the one near me anymore due to service quality issues. I do remember them tasting pretty good back in HS.

Whats a good CFS to you?

Its all about the breading and the gravy for me, sometimes they can be too dry.

They are all over Texas. The CFS is huge and has a nice jalapeno gravy.

We also shared the Peaks Sampler of buffalo tenders, mozzarella sticks, queso, fried pickles, salsa, and chips. The appetizers were nothing to write home about, but my friend’s larger-than-Texas-sized chicken fried steak was surprisingly one of the best versions of a CFS I have ever had. Pounded very thin and not overly breaded, the meat was fried to a crisp yet still tender and juicy.

Number one it has to be well tenderized so that it isnt chewy, well seasoned but not salty with a golden breading that's not mushy or burnt but thick enough to cut thru and hold the gravy without breaking apart from the meat.

My favorite was always Hickory Hollow but they closed the one in town and the only one is out in the ass end of nowhere.

Amazing gravy thick gravy, and the large one could feed me by itself for a couple of days. It was comically huge. It looked like a prop from The Flintstones.

The best CFS in Houston is at Pappy's on I-10. Barbecue Inn on Cross timbers is also good. Both make their gravy from scratch which is a must if you want a good CFS. Don't try to sell me any of that prepackaged powdered SYSCO gravy.

Yeah it’s served at restaurants here and there. Why not for you because of spicy factor?

IMO, it would take to much away from the flavor that I want and something about the queso turns me off on a CFS.

Not opposed to it having a mild kick though.

What's the best steak for a CFS?

I usually just go with whatever is cubed.
