I consider it a GM failure every time one the Astros lose a young player to a waiver claim, because it means the Astros had a player another team wanted, and they didn’t get anything in return for them except a open 40 man spot. Mayfield and Armenteros are not top prospects, but they are obviously major league quality players. Cant tell me the Diamondbacks and Braves wouldn’t have given up a DSL lotto for each.

Do you really think the Astros front office did not try to trade those guys?

    Really?

I’m sure they made some attempt. But resources that can be devoted to completing trades are limited, that’s why it’s a skill for these executives to know which teams to call, which players to ask for in return, and how to sell their player.

So you actually think the reason they did not reach out for interest to every team is because of a lack of skill and resources?

Do you not know about group emails or text chains?

Do you think the waiver snuck up on them or that they only have a couple of people handling this stuff?

I'm sorry but none of this makes sense.

    This.

The teams that have 40-man roster room aren't going to trade for a replacement player when they know some teams will have to waive replacement level players and sometimes a little better. It doesn't matter to them much if it is Mayfield or some other bloke. Occasionally, a team will have a player that is viewed better than a replacement level player that there isn't room for him on their 40-man, and they can trade him. Example of such a player is Solak (not sure what happened to him at end of season, but he was looking decent until that turd of a month).

    You don’t sound very sorry.

Good players need to be cleared from 40 man rosters all the time. That’s a big part of what today is, and a big part of what separates deep rosters from shallow rosters and good GMs from bad ones.

    You don't sound very intelligent.

It boils down to you think they don't have staffs of people looking at 40 man rosters years ahead of time and making calls and decisions accordingly.

There’s nothing quality about Mayfield and he’s pushing 30. There’s only so many spots you can use to protect better prospects from the Rule V draft.

And good GMs with shallow rosters are aware of this.

It's a different world now that MLB teams are going to cut the number of minor league teams. You will see a lot of players cut because teams won't even have room for a "DSL lotto pick".

Gotta think there’s going to be a trade. Free up atleast three spots on the 40 man for free agents.
Due to age Sneed, James, Bielak, Scrubb
