I don’t wanna do the whole “there’s no way he’s coming here” and then be the either “told you so fools” or have it blow up in my face with it happening and people quoting me and me happy I’m wrong.... But now I am seeing it being talked about as if it’s a forgone conclusion and I am very confused as to why we would assume this would go our way considering the disaster that has preceded, but also as if this would be huge. Things aren’t better. With it without CW. And it’s probably gonna be without
it “fell through” because it would have been illegal. See what happened to the Bogdon deal. it is highly possible a SnT deal comes together, but it has to happen after tomorrow at 5pm.
Wood is a good defender when he has other good defenders around him. He is also a capable switch defender and his length and athleticism would help the Rockets interior. His ability to score is his best asset. He just always finds a way. His biggest flaw (other than be a flake) is that he doesn’t pass. He isn’t as bad as some guys, but once he has the ball he is going to shoot...that is likely okay with the current Rockets because he is going to be single covered. However if the Rockets do move Harden and Westbrook, he could become a black hole. Daryl Morey offered a #1 for him last year, however he wanted to have Covington AND Wood on the floor together defensively and now that isn’t possible.
Would have been tough to offer more for him last year knowing he’ll be an URFA. If we can pull off a S&T for him, I’m all bout running it back!
We would have bird rights meaning it would just be a bigger tax Bill. If we pulled off the trade and he had some more tape for teams to see, I imagine we’d be priced out because NY or someone else would be paying him $20M a season. The second he is signed below $15M for four years it’s going to become the best non rookie contract in the NBA.
Only thing we have going for us is every move that Detroit has made, indicates Wood isn’t staying. Other than that, he could end up to a number of different teams.
Harden is gone... but for the sake of argument, I would gladly deal Tucker and Gordon for Horford. The Rockets then have Horford/Wood theoretically at the 4/5 with both capable of shooting from 3 and give the Rockets length. The Rockets could then run House at the 3 and still have the MLE to get a PG that gets minutes and allows the Rockets to play Harden at the 3. Westbrook/Dunn (?) Harden/McLemore House/Nwaba Wood Horford
it really is a lopsided deal that truly benefits no one if Detroit wanted Wood back. Detroit loses cap for matching offers for Wood. We get a worse pick that won’t vest for years. Usually you get a better pick in those deals. You can’t convince me we would have to give that salary up for the MLE... you couldn’t convince me we’d trade Covington without Wood lined up and now Detroit gets involved in the subsequent move? If it’s not Wood then Stone is a wild man.
They would be 8 deep before getting anyone for the minimum... also could likely split the MLE up over two players... so likely 9 deep ... then would have to hope another rotation caliber player is available for the minimum, primarily a PF/C type player.
