    When times are tough, racism and xenophobia really rear their ugly head. When times are good, you'll find that race relations are much better. People are less worried about immigrants stealing jobs if jobs are plentiful. The issue in the Midwest is that we're dealing with large swaths of people living in communities that are decaying. They face rapid population loss with little to no job opportunities for locals. I think its perfectly reasonable that Midwesterners in these areas are angry but unfortuantely we have a political party that is openly redirecting that anger rather than finding solutions to these problems. Republicans will continue to do nothing to help the rural Midwest but a steady diet of anger and grievance will probably be enough to get voters to vote Republican.

    Its not about a changing demographic , its about economics .... and what you might not realize is that those Hispanic immigrants (who came legally) don't particularly care for the "Illegal Alien" either.

    I have several friends who immigrated from South of the border and they all echo the same sentiments ...

    One thing all these new immigrants are great for is pushing real estate values thru the roof in "destination cities".

    I know Midwesterners are trying to protect their jobs and Hispanics come for jobs. I apologize i wrote changing demographics but i was thinking jobs

    @jiggyfly @mikol13 @geeimsobored

    That being said Midwesterners have a reputation of racism because they feel entitled to those union jobs partly by race. They had/have the issue with blacks and now Hispanics. Geeimsobored hit it on the head. People are worried about their livelihoods

    Not exactly sure why I was tagged here. I have been in Houston for 38 years.

    I will say that I have a fairly large family in Indiana and I don’t really hear about this. All are either retired, own their own business, are college educated and doing pretty well for themselves.

    Sooo... I can’t speak intelligently on the topic in today’s climate in Indiana.

    Will say though, it’s a state of have or have nots it seems and by a pretty wide margin. You either have or you’re poor AF.

    Yes if your family didn't depend on the union job at US Steel then you have a different perspective apparently

    I live in the Midwest and travel extensively. It is a very segregated area historically, full of small towns that are somewhat isolated. It is an overall very racist and gritty area.

    The blue collar jobs that were typically awarded to non college educated white men are largely gone. What is left is poverty and crumbling infrastructures. Also the Midwest is far more rural than anyone realizes.

    Outside of a small area of the Deep South, there is no place as bigoted and racist as the Midwest. There is also a sense of entitlement with the non college educated white people who had good paying low intelligence required jobs that are gone.

    There is a deep distrust of Hispanics and blacks.

    Sidenote: Henry Ford who has been scrutinized for anti Semitic beliefs has also been praised for hiring blacks and paying them fair wages
