they're trying to make sense of it from a basketball perspective. we know it was about getting under the tax.

however, we could've dumped house and been under the tax. presumably dumping house's $3.75M wouldn't have cost a FRP like Ariza's $12.8M.

so its just puzzling how we had to sacrifice roco just to get under the tax. it doesn't make sense in a win-now direction, or in a rebuilding direction.

it only makes sense if its just so tilman can say he spent the full NTMLE and paid $4.6M to acquire a pick on draft night so the average fan stops calling him cheap.

90% of the 2nd round picks don't make $4.8 million in their entire career.

After the last moves the Rockets hit such a low point that things can only get better...right?

the pistons pick is top 16 protected for 4 years. will they be making the playoffs anytime soon? no. in 2025 and 2026 its top 10 protected so maybe by then it conveys.

the 2021 Portland pick will likely be worse than this years since we just made them significantly better.

then we have to assume we will actually use these picks and not trade them to get under the luxury tax as we seem to do every year under Tillman.

finally, even if we do use them, wouldn't have been better to use use #16 if we were trying to rebuild since the other two picks will very likely be worse? and wouldn't it have been better to just keep roco rather than sign someone for the MLE if we were trying to win? we are worse off both now and later in order to keep Bubba Gump's doors open.

Are least I don't have to watch ariza in a rockets jersey again..... But man. Just shedding $$$ at the expense of drafting our future.

i was just saying , in the case we dump house ... we likely dont get those picks.

not saying i love our moves , especially the one tonight to DET.

the DET protections are even worse becasue they can make the playoffs and if they are the 7th or 8th seed in the east and the seeds from the west all have better records .. then we still dont get the pick *

    * i think , for the first 4 years . My guess is the pick conveys in 4 years

Obviously the $4.6mil. isn't for the Lakers' 2021 2nd round pick. it's combined with the Ariza deal for the Pistons to off-set some of that salary. I guess the limit you can purchase a 2nd pick is higher than the cash you can attached to a traded player so that's what the Pistons wanted. Stone yet found another loophole to make this deal work.
so this deal DOES opens up our spending flexibility, it's up to Tilman to keep up his words now

Hell, at this point becoming like the Knicks would be preferable. At least Dolan would spend for his team.

I think the moral of the story is the Rockets are trying to move Westbrook first in a move that can bring back in another star player that can then convince Harden to stay... and with that deal they know that as soon as that pick is made it loses value hence the move to kick the can.

Also those picks could be needed in that pick to get Westbrook moved and get a quality player back.

If Harden ends up getting moved it’s unlikely the 16th pick this year is going to change the direction of the team and they likely didn’t work out any of the late lottery players so it felt like a risk of a wasted pick.

If both players are staying this year though then these deals make little sense other than saving bailing out Tillfart.

I don’t disagree with your assessment of the owner, but remind me who made the idiotic deal in 2016 giving Ryan Anderson 4-year 80 mil, one year before Tillman purchased the team? Everything that was given up was to cover his tracks of the horrible contract.

that's true, if we just dumped house to avoid the tax we wouldn't get those picks. I just think the 16th pick this year is more valuable than those picks will be. so if we want to rebuild, use the pick. if we want to win now, keep roco since he helps more than those picks and whoever we sign with the NTMLE combined.

we're in a weird limbo where the only success so far is guaranteeing that we won't pay the tax. hooray?

I wonder if there is under the table agreement to do sign and trade with Christian Wood with Pistons as part of this?

Cap space is a generous way to say we basically wound up giving Capela away for nothing because the owner doesn’t want to pay the going rate for decent players. Because he’d rather put it in his pocket. This is all just an investment for him, and a short sighted one at best. When he does have to sell the team, he’ll find he’s driven its value into the ground.

Those of you who are dreaming about what’s coming next season or the one after that etc, are doing just that, dreaming.

This team will not contend with this owner. And that’s not some kind of accident, it’s by design.
