Did they give a racist reason for not certifying? I missed that part. Or did they get called racists for not certifying?
Racists don't tend to cite racism as a reason for their actions much in the same way a bank robber isn't wearing a sign saying, bank robber, when he enters the bank. Not sure if you're aware but Republicans have a long history of targeting black voters for suppression and in this case trying to throw out their legally cast votes.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/michigan-election-results-wayne-county-certifies-deadlock/ Earlier in the night, the two Republicans declined to certify the results due to concerns about precincts in Detroit and suburban communities where the number of votes recorded in poll books at a precinct didn't match the number of tabulated votes at those precincts. In Detroit, 70% of absentee counting boards were not balanced. The precincts that were out of balance without explanation would be the subject of the requested audit. Prior to the second vote, Monica Palmer, the Republican chair of the canvassing board, suggested she would have certified results if Detroit were excluded. This drew sharp criticism, as there were also balance issues in many suburban communities, including Livonia, a major suburb that's 90% White. ... When Kinloch protested that additional county tax money was going to be spent on the ongoing canvass, Palmer said she would be open to certifying much of Wayne County with the exception of Detroit. Other Wayne County municipalities that also reported unbalanced absentee poll books included Livonia, Lincoln Park and Inkster. ... Biden won Detroit 93.5%-5% over Trump, who still received almost 6,000 more votes this year in Michigan's largest city than in 2016. Biden won the county 68%-31% over Trump with more than 863,000 votes cast. I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, in the interest of charity, that race wasn't a factor in their minds but rather the fact that Detroit votes would overwhelmingly be in Biden's favor. To suggest that Detroit specifically should be thrown out seems to be a pretty clear case of partisan hackery.
Of course I'm aware....it's in our DNA. Everyone knows Repubs suppress and Dem's cheat. It's what they do.
I never thought about it that way, but I get it. The word freedom probably has different context to those living in the cities vs. rural.
You are right that it wasn't about race but about voting. But that's still systemic racism as the net result is to deny black people a voice. In fact, it's pretty much what is meant by systematic racism. Laws or decisions that are mean to push forward one's agenda at the net expense of minorities. Major checkbox there.
So we have Republicans actually conspiring to suppress the vote of an entire city. And when they get called out on it, that is proof of a Democrat conspiracy in the minds of Trumpers. You really can’t win against stupid.
