Why take the chance? They is no proof that he wouldn't have either. There was no way to add Russ without moving Paul. Harden knew this.
Not sure if Harden really knew this to be true, Morey was able to build trade for Jimmy Butler that did not require either Harden or CP3 to be moved. He could have had same assumption.
Butler never wanted to come. It's a moot point. He was extremely lucky if he did find one, I'm sure more than one team would be involved as always but it is highly unlikely that the same scenario could play out again. Too many players change teams, injuries, personal preferences. Why rent Butler for a year? When you know he is going to leave anyway?
As I understood the trade, Butler was going to be a SnT with Capela, EGo and other pieces going to Philly. It was not going to be a 1 year deal.
Butler ghosted Houston after Dwayne Wade convinced him to run his own team in Miami. He may not have been much enamored with CP3 either. Loves Harden, and even Westbrook (tried to lure him to Miami last season).
