What? I are you saying that students and their family do not currently factor in the cost of tuition when deciding between schools?
Of course they do. Many moons ago, I got into all of the public universities I applied to in Texas, but because Texas A&M essentially gave me a free ride, I didn't even think about attending UH / UT / Texas Tech, etc. If I suddenly didn't have to consider student debt after graduating, I might have looked harder at my other choices instead of picking the one I didn't have to take loans out on. That's my point - especially for those that come from not-at-all well-off families. Tamu was a free ride while UH wanted something like 14k a year. No debt or 56k after 4? Easy choice.
Executive orders aren't all meaningful in a good way. Edit. I see what you mean with congress, but my point still stands.
Not necessarily. Expensive does not always mean higher quality, and affordable doesnt always mean lower qualityor cheap.
With education it definitely does in the US. The only exception is out of state tuition. If you're talking about universally, sure, you're going to find evidence of the contrary. But my overgeneralization stated here is quite widely accepted. If you want to make a specific point, I'm still listening.
Executive orders and their use is nothing new. How do you define “spree”? Presidents are exercising executive orders about once a week in modern times. Historically Presidents like Wilson were using the authority 4-5 times a week. So now to see people concerned about it is disingenuous. The door for executive orders has Hillary has never exercised an EO. Part of the issue with having a President like Trump and Obama rely on executive orders is that it opens the door to future Presidential use. I don’t think we will see Biden exercise 250 EO’s during his term, but he is going to use it on important issues. The Supreme Court is a 6-3 conservative majority, they can always rule it unconstitutional. Be prepared, Bernie Sanders is pushing for executive orders to be exercised. I will wait to see what Biden actually does, because what he wants and what others say he want are not always the same thing.
You said I don't want to hear any complaining about executive orders after what we have gone through the last 7-8 years. I'm gonna complain if the executive order was garbage. I don't care what happened prior, I'll judge Biden like I judged Trump, Obama, and Bush.
Not necessarily. There are many expensive schools that provide a lesser education than less expensive schools. Further in many cases the increased cost of tuition is going into new and fancier amenities or administrative overhead. The money is not often going to professors. Further some schools have massive endowments. Finances should be going to the professors, to ensure safe and sanitary campuses. It shouldn’t go into constantly building new health clubs, new fancier housing and administrative over head.
UH offered money - it just wasn't a full ride. If A&M / UT / UH / Tech were all on equal footing in terms of total cost, then I would have considered the merits of attending each. But because A&M was significantly cheaper than the rest of the offers from the schools, it was a no-brainer for me. I know many people aren't in my situation, and I guess you could say I didn't see the forest through the trees or whatever analogy you'd like to use, but student loan debt was a big issue for me then. I have a friend who would have gotten a full ride to any university in Texas, but chose to attend Duke and paid a lot of money to do so. Different strokes for different folks.
I need to see some examples. What school provides less education for more money, relative to what other school?
The “Build the Wall” people really have no leg to stand on. Let’s see what his first 100 day plan actually is. Yes executive action will be warranted if McConnell is leading the Senate. No Biden will not be “canceling” all student debt. Is there something they are cooking up that can help... maybe. Let’s just wait and see. This conversation is pretty dumb. A lot of people are really really ready to sport hate the Dems. Let’s at least get Trump out of the White House first please?
Its obvious he will. My point is you shouldn't tell other people not to complain if he were to do something stupid. You might find people that empathize with your feelings about the past, but whatever Biden does will and should get judged by people in the public for what he will do.
The thing is that govt debt is not like you or me debt. Everyone owes everyone, no one actually makes money anymore - they just sort of create it electronically. At some point I suspect we just pay it all off......and then move on...ala Iceland. DD
I guess the private wall people, whose wall is in the process of eroding out and falling down, will continue?
