In addition to losing Peterson's seat, Dems are probably not going to win the State Senate. And this is a longer term problem. The DFL used to do really well in rural Minnesota (until Trump showed up). Trump has really unlocked some messaging that works. The DFL is basically dead now in Northwestern Minnesota and Southwest Minnesota. And once the Iron Range senators retire, they'll probably lose those seats too. Peterson's loss is an extreme example but there are huge implications down ballot from this.

The bigger problem is that its only going to get harder to cobble together consistent legislative majorities unless this trend is reversed. The DFL will be fine statewide but getting any consistent control of the legislature will require a Democratic gerrymander at this rate because we're losing the ability to win anything in rural Minnesota.

You can't just look at the topline and think things are fine. This was a bad night for Democrats in Minnesota (even though Biden won comfortably). We had a clear shot at full control of government and somehow flubbed it because Trump called Democrats socialists enough times.
