grease lighting Used to ride that thing non stop growing up I swear my older sister wouldn’t let me ride anything else with her
I mainly went to Astroworld in the early years, late 60’s and early 70’s when my brother worked there. The only ride that freaked me out was the barrel of fun. I think I only went on that ride one time. Fun fact: the only roller coaster Astroworld had in the beginning was the Serpent. I don’t really consider the Alpine Sleigh Ride a roller coaster.
my first time was during a school field trip. got a rox bball from those basketball shot games after 2 tries, that's 50%, curry numbers. the second a third were years later, one of which i got extremely sick for some reason. htine deserves another one. maybe tillmen can invest in one and make more monees.
The map is from 1983. I found a big version of it by going from Google Images to Pinterest which pointed to this thread: https://bbs.clutchfans.net/index.php?threads/astroworld-memories.252114/ Maps from other eras in there as well.
I was a 90s kid. I only ever went there for specialized discounted events it seemed. Various Scout days. Physics day in high school. I guess the latter, around 2000, is the last time I went. I did like the Batman ride they added in the 90s. I liked the Dungeon Drop. As a kid, the Texas Cyclone was a fear to be conquered, and I eventually did it. Man, that thing rattled you to death, but it was fun. The Serpent was a more modern steel constructed coaster, and the Gs it put you through because of the tight turns it could do always made me feel sick afterwards. I liked the Bamboo Chute. Looking at these maps, it's amazing how much stuff they packed in there. It also makes a pretty compelling case for why it's no longer around. Can you imagine the cost of staff and upkeep for such a place? Still, I miss it. Relic of a bygone era. I'm glad I have the memories etched in my gut and some of my guts etched in the pavement there.
No, it was an horrific decision by a moron at Six Flags who lost his job because he thought the land was valuable. It isn't.
Skyscreamer was the late night fav. XLR8 all time fav fav. Texas Cyclone had to be first, it was at the front and you could always hear the screams from the parking lot which always got me jacked up to ride the rides. That big flipping space ship. Ultra twister. THE CABLE CARS!!! Mayan Mind Bender. Excalibur (some kid threw a rock at us one time, hit me square in the head and knocked me out. **** was lit) until they took out all the old ones for Taz and Serial Thriller. Both were cool rides but I haaaated that they took out so much real estate. The Viper! That's the first coaster I ever did that flipped. Good times. Build another one, we will come.
Lots of good times there. Only one bad time: when I vomited everywhere on the looping starship. That was less than ideal. I felt sick as **** after eating greasy food and not drinking any water all day. We rode it once and friend wanted to ride it again (no line that day). Told my friend that I was going to pass on round 2. He then challenged my manhood. At that point, obviously, I had no choice. So the whole time I am just 100% focusing on not hurling. I make it to the end, all good. Whew. But, while waiting for the bars to come up to let us out of our seats, the vomit eruption happens. The guy working the ride said, "Aw man you threw up all over my ride!" I had.
First upside down roller coast was Viper, and we still have fond memories of it. That would be the first one we'd run to, because the lines weren't long. Might ride it twice. Then excalibur, XLR8, Greased Lightning (had to ride that more than once). Batman Escapes was, and at least the lines gave you something to look at. Remember it being pretty shabby at the end of its days though. We liked Serial Thriller too. I'd always be with my brother, and Taz's Texas Tornado was always closed. I went once on a school trip and got to ride it (twice I think), and he's still jealous about it.
I wondered what became of the guys who made that decision. If they were losing money there, I'd get it...but as I understand it, they weren't. They simply valued the land far higher than it ultimately was worth.
Texas Cyclone was a beast, that dam thing beat you to death but man it was fun.........I went early 80`s while in HS.....good times
First time I rode was in 1979. I was riding with an older friend. Back then there was no head brace or anything protective other than a seatbelt and the T-bar over your legs. As we're going up the first incline he unbuckles our seatbelt and raises his arms. I pretty much white-knuckled that entire first ride. Good times.
It was bumpy... the Texas Rattler at SA/6 Flags is the headache machine though. Felt like an actual car wreck. Batman escapes was the one I couldn't do. The bicycle seats...I just don't need a bicycle seat jammed into my gooch like 45 times in 2 minutes.
my earliest memories were the boot slide, six shooter swing and the bumper cars (those were gone by the early 80's). i also slam danced to morrissey at southern star amphitheater which means im pretty f***ing OG hardcore.
