Nothing crazy to add. Thanks Springer for all the years here and you gave us some great memories. That being said, you're replaceable and not worth a mega mega contract. Hope he signs if we offer him a fair deal, if another team offers a mega deal... bye.
I dont really follow baseball or the astros, but blows my mind that baseball fans in houston have this mentality of not spending and going cheap. Seems nuts when you consider the rockets and texans
Maybe he's still used to working under TB's budget. Not familiar on how to operate with a bigger budget haha But joking aside, I wonder if the MLB off season will be like the NHL off season. Some teams have an internal budget. Only 1 big UFA got a long term big money deal. The other big UFA ended up signing a 1 year deal and trying his luck next year. Another big UFA is apparently taking a 1 year deal as well. Other UFA's that were a tier below took a cheaper deal then what fans were expecting. And in shorter terms(3 to 5 years). And if teams have an internal budget, maybe good players available for trade. Do you guys think it will be like this in baseball? Maybe lower market teams ends up trading good players to clear salary? Maybe Houston can acquire someone good for cheap(prospects). Maybe teams reluctant to hand out big contracts so maybe Springer is willing to sign a 1 year deal with Houston and try his luck for a bigger contract next year(although risky. A year older and injuries can happen). I guess Springer can sign a 1 year deal elsewhere but maybe other big UFA'S willing to sign with Houston for 1 year. Maybe players below Springer's tier ends up signing for alot less then what we're used to. Or won't be any different. Bigger teams will have no issue handing out big money for players?
That’s y I think if Astros make a qualifying offer to Brantley, I think he will accept it and work on a 3 year contract. Springer might be the only field player they will get a large contract beside Realmuto. Even that, Springer won’t come close to anything near what Rendon got from the Angels. And I hope they contract come back to bite their asses like the Pujols contract. I say Springer will get somewhere between 23-25M per year. 5Y/125M
Realmuto, Springer, LeMahieu, and Ozuna will get paid. Brantley, Nelson Cruz, Justin Turner, and Didi Gregorious will be the next tier down.
These are the position player free agent tiers for me: $100M+: Springer Realmuto $50-100M: LeMahieu Gregorius Semien Ozuna $20-50M: Simmons McCann La Stella Profar Villar Hernandez Brantley Cruz $10-20M: Schoop Pederson Grossman Bradley Pillar Marisnick Puig
Pitching tiers: $100M+: Bauer $50-100M: Stroman Tanaka $20-50M: Gausman Lester Minor Morton Odorizzi Paxton Quintana Ray Walker Kela Rosenthal Treinen Workman Yates $10-20M: Arrieta Bailey Hamels Happ Hill Kluber Chatwood Richards Samardzija Wacha Wood Giles Hendriks Alvarez Watson
Having $33M allocated to someone that won't be playing and untradeable makes FA a difficult proposition.
Depends on if they explore a restructuring/deferred model with him. Certainly he owes nothing to the team but then again they were the ones who offered an extension before they had to.
What in the world? How did Kluber wind up in the blockbuster video .99 cent bin? Last memory I have of him was the fear of facing him back in 2018 in the Cleveland series then being knocked around with a couple of homers by the Stros.
If you were an insurance company, how much would you charge to insure a 37 year old pitcher's $66MM contract?
It counts towards the competitive balance tax either way. I'm not exactly sure what they ultimately did regarding the tax for the shortened season, but we were over the threshold in 2020, presumably making us a repeater in 2021 meaning a 30% tax rate. If it weren't for the 2020 financial strain on the game, you probably don't worry about it given Bregman & Altuve are the only guaranteed deals in 2022, making it easier to get under to avoid the 50% rate and reset the clock. Of course that is also when we will be seeing a new CBA, so who even knows what to expect. Threshold is $210M. We have $139.5M committed, plus LMJ, Diaz, & Correa Arbitration (the shortened season makes it impossible to truly guess what they will get), but lets say $20M between them (based on MLB Trade Rumors, but a normal season would have probably led to $30M+). That leaves about $50M for the remaining roster, which on the minimum-esque guys that will be $12M or so, leaving $38M before luxury tax. You might fit them both in under that, but that leaves no room for any name free agents. And there is almost a 0% chance that there is an insurance policy covering him fully. The rate of injuries to pitchers have to make insurance policies nearly impossible unless like Bagwell's they are for if they never can play again (which certainly won't be Verlander's case).
