Think this really remains to be seen. Carroll and Harbaugh have been the only two successful transitions in the last 20 years. The jury is still out on Kingsbury and Rhule obviously but Kelly, Saban, Schiano, Petrino, Spurrier and Butch Davis were all complete and utter failures. That being said, I'd be on board with David Shaw in a heartbeat.
None of those are terribly recent examples. Chip Kelly was the most recent, and that was a single season four years ago. (And he was better than you probably remember - 10-6 his first two seasons with the Eagles and then was handed the GM role and promptly traded away Philadelphia's best offensive player... gosh, why does that sound so damn familiar?) Anyway, the game has rapidly evolved over the past several years; offenses are getting more innovative and borrowing heavily from college football. Meanwhile, the personnel is turning over more rapidly; the NFL is now built around 3-4 large, important contracts and then you better flood the roster with good, cheap draft capital. The churn is constant and you need a coach used to building programs in that constantly evolving environment (IMO). I really think we're going to see more and more college coaches move up and be successful at the NFL level. Right?!... He would be a tremendous get.
Maybe Dabo sees how much O'Brien has ruined/wronged Watson, and that motivates him to leave Clemson and take the Texans job in order to save Watson's "Michael Jordan" career? Possible.
I told you the PLAYERS are the reason they made to the game against the Chiefs. O'Brien and his idiotic 4th calls are a reason he needed to go.
Dabo is like Saban. Why leave a cushy College Job where you get all the best players for the pressure of the NFL? Unless you played or coached in the NFL for a long time as an assistant or head coach, it is not worth it. You become LEGEND in the College game.
Dabo loves Watson, a lot. When you see your kid get screwed out of a potential HOF career because of a madman like Bill O'Brien, you care. Dabo might make an emotional decision to rescue Watson from Bill O'Brien.
I want the Texans to get rid of BOB and Rev Easterby and hire a real GM and let him hire a coach that fits with his philosophy.
Think their track record is the reason why we don’t have that many recent examples to be honest. Even with Kelly, he had a better start than most of his predecessors but flamed out after 6-9 and 2-14 seasons. It is nuts that Kliff Kingsbury was the next guy to get called up after the four year hiatus. He just happen to catch the perfect wave in the McVay storm two years ago. Think a lot will depend on how him and Rhule fair.
if the "fire Bill OBrien" thread is gonna be the place for damning stats then so be it!! lol gonna be a long season boys and girls. https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/lions-texans-two-nfl-teams-no-turnovers
Maybe, but the schedule after the bye is much easier. If they can survive at 2-5, and Watson stays healthy...there's a good chance they are 8-7 or 9-6 going into the Tennessee game. The sad thing is that even if they are 7-8 going into that game, there will be articles about how the players didn't quit on BoB during this strange season and he deserves another chance during a "real" season.
Definitely...Cal owns the local media for the most part... Also, if they go 4-12, it probably means that Watson got injured and that will be another excuse thrown out there as to why BoB needs another chance.
not that I think youre wrong , but saban left and then came back. Even if dabo ***** the NFL bed , he'd still be welcomed back at the college level
Saban lasted, what, 2 season?, then went back to College. Dabo will look at Saban and ask: why leave Clemson, where I am a legend already? They are paying $9.3 million a year. I MAY be able to get $11-$12 million (Belichick is at $12million) for a NFL job. Is it worth leaving for $3 million now, when Clemson will keep giving me raise for another 10-20 years? Dabo isn't going anywhere. And he would have leave the program he rebuilt and to go somewhere else if the NFL fails?
Give me John Dorsey or Louis Riddick as GM Eric Bienemy or Greg Roman as Head Coach. Not only does the next coach have to be offensive minded, but preferably been successful with QBs in Watson’s mold.
